The Towson University Wellness Center will host the annual Baltimore Cardiology and Rehabilitation Conference on October 18, 2008. The conference is designed for exercise physiologists, nurses, dietitians, physicians, and other healthcare professionals dedicated to diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating patients with cardiovascular disease. The conference focuses on exercise training guidelines, risk factor assessment, cardiovascular pathophysiology, and both primary and secondary prevention.

Upon completion of this series of lectures, participants will have a greater understanding of the various models employed in treating cardiac patients and innovative techniques in risk factor management. In addition, participants will learn new ways to care for individuals with peripheral vascular disease, atrial fibrillation and diabetes.

Featured Speaker - Shala Davis, PhD, FACSM, CSCS

Assessing patients with known or suspected heart disease and their status prior to exercise is an integral c0mponent when designing an appropriate exercise prescription. Dr. Shala Davis returns this year to speak about new techniques that practitioners can employ when assessing patients’ physical activity status. Dr. Davis is Professor of Exercise Science and Graduate Director at East Stroudsburg University. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Davis served as Assistant Professor and Clinical Director of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise Science at Virginia Tech.

Dr. Davis is an active member of many professional organizations, maintaining credentials through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She currently holds ACSM’s Exercise Test Technologist, Exercise Specialist, and Program Director certifications. Furthermore, Dr. Davis is an accomplished writer, co-authoring ACSM’s 2nd Edition Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment Guidelines and a chapter on Clinical Conditions Influencing Exercise Prescription in ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. Dr. Davis’ research interests include special populations, overtraining, and eating disorders.
