Community Engaged University
Towson University is proud to be recognized as one of the country's leaders in
community engagement by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching!
On December 16, 2008 Towson University joined 117 other recognized institutions and
was named in both classification categories: Curricular Engagement and Outreach &
Partnerships.
The preparation of this document was a collective effort bringing together 22 members of
the univirsity community. During the summer months of 2008, Carnegie Classification
Committee members looked deeply into the institutional processes that promoted the
university's commitment to fostering an environment of engaged academia, placing our
students in real world learning situations and establishing unique partnerships with our
surrounding business and educational community. We thank the committee members for
their diligent efforts in helping Towson succeed in attaining this designation.
Receiving designation by the Carnegie Foundation is an honor for Towson University
and is the embodiment of our efforts to better our institution and our surrounding
community. This report, however, only serves as a foundation for future work we will
want to accomplish. TU recently launched the "TU in the Community" website that
provides resources for community engagement projects and a search tool with an
interactive mapping application.
Thank you for your support of and commitment to Towson University's CommunityEngagement efforts.
