Interpretive Problems in History: The Vietnam War

May 23 - June 10, 2009

Discover Vietnam with Towson University in Summer 2009. Explore the multiple facets of Vietnam's history of war throughout the 20th century. Students will spend time in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Da Nang, Hanoi, Hue and more. The program features a variety of academic and cultural visits including the Presidential Palace and War Museum, the Museum of Military history, the DMZ, the Mekong Delta, and Long Xuyen floating market.

Students will trace not only the U.S. involvement in Vietnam but also the French, Russian, Chinese, and Vietnamese perspectives during the period. Vietnam's war history has been shaped both by accounts written shortly after its conclusion, as well as by more recent historical scholarship offering global perspectives on conflict in Southeast Asia. In short, there were many Vietnam Wars. Given this reality the program will emphasize understanding military experiences within the broader contexts of both cultural and international history.
