South Africa Then & Now - Exploring an Emerging Democracy in the Era of Globalization
May 27 - June 12, 2008
While the country of South Africa is known to many from the history of apartheid and the 'world's diplomat' Nelson Mandela, many are not aware that the 'New' South Africa represents one of the most successful, if not challenging, constitutional democracies in the modern world.
Program participants will explore the cultural complexity of South Africa during the apartheid era and the way in which social identities are being created in the country today through research and anthropological fieldwork. The central question for the collective research project asks, "How is an emergent democracy created in the era of globalization?" Research questions will be developed in a pre-departure seminar and investigated through fieldwork experiences in several locations in South Africa.
The program will start in Cape Town, then move to Durban, and finish in Johannesburg. It will include visits to Robben Island, Cape Point, Stellensbosch, a safari game park, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Zulu Cultural Village, and the Constitutional Court.
