The Holocaust in Historical Context: History of the Jews in Poland in the 20th Century
March 13 - 21, 2010
Trace the history of the Jews in Poland with Towson University Prof. Jerzy Mazur next spring. This program provides a unique opportunity to visit two ancient Polish cities - Warsaw and Kraków - which used to be major centers of Jewish religious and cultural life in Eastern Europe. Participants will gain insight into the history of East European culture with its museums, theaters, gothic edifices, and medieval city centers.
Warsaw is the largest city in Poland and its capital since 1596. It is also one of the fastest growing cities in Europe. It is known as the 'phoenix city', as it was completely destroyed during World War II and rebuilt with the heroic effort of Polish citizens.
The royal capital for half a millennium, Kraków has witnessed more of Polish history than any other city in the country. Miraculously, the city emerged largely intact after WWII and today has the most historic buildings and monuments of all cities in Poland. UNESCO included the historic center of Kraków on its first list of world cultural heritage sites and in 2007 the city celebrated its 750th birthday.
Program highlights include visits to the Warsaw History Museum, the Warsaw Ghetto, the Jewish Heritage Institute, the Schindler Factory, and Holocaust sites such as Auschwitz, the Jewish Cultural Center, Nowa Huta, Wawel Castle, and Wieliczka Salt Mines.
