Spanish Language and Culture in Panama

January 2 - 23, 2009

Spend 3 weeks advancing your Spanish language skills and discovering Central American culture in tropical Panama in Minimester 2009. Panama City is one of the most cosmopolitan and modern cities in Latin America offering a safe and friendly environment for your study abroad experience. Program highlights include a tour of the Panama Canal locks and a 2-day stay at a beach resort .

Students will take 'Pronounciation and Oral Expression' plus an introductory course in Panamanian culture. The program will allow students to enhance their Spanish language skills and experience the local culture by living with a Panamanian host family.

Instructor: Dr. Lea Ramsdell , Towson University Foreign Languages Department

Course: SPAN 375 Pronounciation and Oral Expression (3 credits) plus SPAN 371 Panamanian and Central American Culture (3 credits). Students must have completed SPAN 202 or equivalent to participate in the program.

Housing: Participants will live with a local Panamanian family. The host family provides 2 meals a day (breakfast and dinner) and accommodation in a shared double room. Single-occupancy rooms may be available for an additional fee.

Cost:*$3,600 includes tuition (6 credits), health insurance, housing, 2 meals a day, roundtrip airfare, and excursions. Some group dinners will be included. Additional costs include $150 study abroad fee, lunch daily (approx. $3),and personal expenses.

*The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

Application Deadline: OCTOBER 15, 2008.

Application Process: Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and have completed SPAN 202 or equivalent to participate in the program. Fill out the application (PDF) and submit it to the TU Study Abroad Office. $250 deposit required at time of application. Non-TU students must also submit a completed Non-Degree Enrollment Application (PDF).
