Sport and Human Performance in Global Perspective, Australia and New Zealand

Want to get away? Study abroad with TU Professors Jessica Braunstein and Carrie Albright in Australia and New Zealand in January 2009. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the cultural aspects of sport and exercise in global perspective through first hand experience.

The program includes a week in Auckland, New Zealand and a week in Sydney, Australia. The course features guest lectures from leading sport executives and a variety of sport and performance-related industries. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with officials from the New Zealand Breakers (basketball), the Australian Rugby Union, Australian Rules Football, Australian Lacrosse, and the National Olympic Training Center. The program also includes visits to multinational sporting enterprises such as the North Harbour Rugby Union, the America's Cup sailing experience, and the Millenium Institute of Sport and Health. Housing is in shared apartments and hotels/hostels.

This course is for students interested in exercise science, sport management, international business, popular culture, sport tourism, and global sport sales and sponsorship Attendance at all lectures and site visits is mandatory. Students will be graded on the quality of their participation in the site visits and assignments.

Course: KNES 494: Sport and Human Performance in Global Perspective (3 credits) and KNES 285: Sport: A Cross Cultural Perspective (3 credits).

Students may earn credit for KNES 470 (3 credits) instead of KNES 285 but must complete additional coursework. Students choosing this option will complete a modified program module including readings specific to travel study and diverse sport cultures and will be required to complete an reflection essay on the topic of 'learning experiences outside the classroom/study abroad.'

Students can earn graduate level credit KNES 594 (3 credits) by completing an extended research paper on a topic of the student's choosing with advice from the instructor. Graduate students will earn a total of 3 credits.

Costs:*$5,670 includes tuition (6 credits), housing, health insurance, roundtrip airfare, and excursions. Additional costs include $150 study abroad fee, meals, and personal expenses. Breakfast is included at some locations.

Application Deadline: OCTOBER 15, 2008. Admission is on a rolling basis. Early application is advised as space is limited.

Application Process: Fill out an application (PDF) and submit it to the TU Study Abroad Office. $250 deposit is required at time of application.

Non-TU undergraduate students must also submit a completed Non-Degree Enrollment Application (PDF). Non-TU graduate students must also submit an Application for Graduate School (PDF) .
