Harmony of Tradition and Modernity: Philosophy, Religion, and Culture in Korea (GenEd II.D)

Discover the Korean contribution to philosophy and religion in the East Asian tradition with Prof. Suck Choi in January 2009. You will examine Korean traditional and modern philosophy and religion, focusing on Korean Buddhism, Confucianism, Neo-Confucianism, art history and contemporary industry. This course will offer diverse experiences and resources to confirm the growing interest in Korea and its culture.
To explore Korean traditional spirituality, you will visit several palaces, castles, traditional educational institutions, temples (including an overnight stay) in cities such as Seoul, Suwon, Andong and Gyeongju. Field trips to major industries such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai are also included.
Instructor: Prof. Suck Choi , Towson University Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
Course: PHIL 219 Introduction to Asian Philosophy (3 credits). GenEd II.D.
Students may choose to take RLST 357 or ASST 470 in place of PHIL 219 and will complete additional assignments as instructed by the faculty director.

Cost:* $4,200 includes tuition (3 credits), health insurance, housing, most meals, roundtrip airfare, and excursions. Additional costs include $150 study abroad fee, meals, personal expenses.
