TU Study Abroad Exchange Program in Japan

The Japan Studies Program (JSP) at Tokyo International University (TIU) provides an opportunity for international students to study Japanese language and gain an understanding of historical, social, political, economic, and cultural aspects of Japanese society. The small student-to-faculty ratio in the JSP Program guarantees personalized attention and an intensive language learning environment. Students enrolled in the JSP Program also benefit from an active intercultural exchange through first-hand experiences with faculty, students, host families and others in the local community.
Since it was founded in 1965, TIU has emphasized international studies and exchange in order to produce internationally-minded students and currently hosts over 800 international students from over 15 countries. In addition the university has relationships with 10 affiliated universities in eight other countries including their own Tokyo International University of America campus in Oregon here in the U.S.
The JSP is open to English speaking students in all fields of study. In addition to the required Japanese language course(s), students can choose from several elective classes taught in English as well as numerous field trips, excursions and cultural activities. The JSP also offers an optional five day trip to Kansai/Hiroshima every semester for an additional cost. Students are encouraged to utilize the Japanese Peer Assistants and Conversation Time programs and participate in the numerous club activities offered at TIU.
Location:
Students enrolled in the JSP take classes on Campus 1 located in the unique and historical city of Kawagoe. The Kawagoe area has been inhabited since stone-age times, and is famous for the important role it played geographically, economically, and politically during the Tokugawa era when it was a bustling castle town. Surrounded by modern buildings and shopping centers, the center of town retains Kawagoe’s ancient atmosphere and is referred to as "Little Tokyo". Click here to take a tour of the TIU campus.
Kawagoe City is approximately 35 minutes by train from Tokyo while also being close to more rural areas. This gives TIU's international exchange students the opportunity to explore both the traditional and more modern aspects of Japan. Also located in Kawagoe is the famous temple of Kitain with it’s many cherry blossom trees, remnants of Kawagoe’s ancient castle, and the city’s symbolic bell tower.
In Kawagoe, you get to see Japan as it is today, both ancient and modern at the same time.

Fall: late August to mid December
Spring: early March to late June
Housing Options: Participants live with a local host family which allows students to
experience a typical Japanese family's daily life, while providing an
opportunity to greatly improve language skills. Many students regard the host
family experience as one of their most enriching experiences in Japan as it
provides valuable insight into the life and culture of Japan.
Homestay families are recruited from the local community and surrounding areas. Most families are located within Kawagoe and require only a short train or bus ride to TIU. Families provide a private room and 16 meals per week ( breakfast and dinner on weekdays and three meals a day on weekends).
Cost: TU Tuition and fees. Additional costs include transportation, meals, housing, visa/passport fees, $300 study abroad fee, personal expenses, $150 health insurance fee.

Application Process: Must be a full-time undergraduate degree-seeking student at TU. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Junior/Senior status. One year of college level Japanese with a "B" average.
