African Literature, Culture, and the Environment, Ghana

Travel to Ghana and experience firsthand its rich cultural, historical, and political background. Study human interactions with the environment for a greater understanding of culture and aesthetics. Participants will become familiar with literature by African women writers such as Ghanaian Ama Ata Aidoo through reading, lectures, ad field trips. Highlights include visits to craft villages, art museums, national parks, and religious shrines.
The Republic of Ghana is located in West Africa. It is bordered on the west by Cote d'Ivoire, on the north by Burkina Faso, and on the east by Togo. Formerly the center of the gold, ivory, and slave trade, Ghana is home to one of the best game reserves in West Africa, a multitude of good beaches, and plenty of hospitality.
The program features travel to Accra, the Cape Coast, Kumasi , and Tema. Highlights include visits to the Elmina Slave Castles, the National Museum in Accra, Kumasi Open Air Market, Salaga Market (UNESCO World Heritage site), Manhyia Palace Museum, Aburi Botanical Garden, Tafo Cocoa Research Institute, Bonwire Craft Village, Kakum National Park, Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the W.E.B. DuBois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture, and Parliament. Service learning opportunities will also be available.

Cost:*$4,300 includes academic credit, health insurance, housing, roundtrip airfare, most meals and excursions. Additional costs include $150 study abroad fee, any meals not included, $50 visa fee, and personal expenses.
*The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

Application Deadline: OCTOBER 15, 2009. Admission is on a rolling basis. Early application is advised as space is
limited.
Application Process: Students must hold a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and have a high school diploma or equivalent experience.
Fill out an application (PDF) and submit it to the TU Study Abroad Office. $250 deposit required at time of application. Non-TU students must also submit a completed Non-Degree Enrollment Application (PDF).
