German Language at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg

July 13 - August 1, 2008

Brush up on your German this summer in Oldenburg, Germany! Take courses in German language at the intermediate and advanced levels including culture, society, history, and politics.

The program is hosted by the Carl von Ossietzky University in the town of Oldenburg. Oldenburg is located in north-west Germany approximately 30 miles from Bremen. The city features everything you might need as a student with a vibrant social and cultural life.

Oldenburg is known as a city of cycling with approximately 170 miles of bicycle paths so everything is within close reach. Students enrolled in the summer program will be given a bicycle to use for the duration of their stay. If you don’t like cycling you can take the bus which is free of charge for students! Students can also travel by train for free throughout Germany so exploring the country is easy and cheap. The Netherlands lies just 60 miles to the north and Oldenburg is within reach of three international airports. Local excursions in Lower Saxony including visits to Bremen and Hamburg are included in the program fee.

The program also offers a 'buddy system' which matches each participant with an Oldenburg student volunteer who will introduce you to local German student life.

Course: GERM 201 (3 credits) and GERM 202 ( 3credits) or GERM 301 (3 credits) and GERM 302 (3 credits). Alternative credit as determined by the TU German Department may be available.

TU students may receive Honors credit for their study abroad experience - click here for more information.

Classes consist of small-group instruction with integrated excursions taught by local professional teachers and graduate instructors who are native speakers of German with experience in language teaching. The program focuses on the standard use of spoken and written German and on cultural features of modern German society.

Housing: Students will live in dorms (limited availability) or shared student apartments with cooking facilities. Housing arrangements are made directly with the University of Oldenburg and paid upon arrival in Germany. On weekdays participants will be able to purchase a heavily subsidized noonday meal in the university cafeteria.
