French Civilization - the Middle Ages to the Present

May 28 - June 13, 2010

Experience French culture while learning about the country’s rich history. Based in Paris, students will visit and learn about such landmarks as the Louvre, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d'Orsay, and the Palace of Versailles. Excursions outside of Paris will include visits to the chateaux of the Loire Valley and a trip through Normandy, including visits to the Mont-Saint-Michel, and the D-Day landing beaches.

Students will earn three credits as they trace the history of French civilization through the ages. Program lectures and site visits will provide an overview of France’s cultural past from the medieval cathedrals of Paris and Chartres to the 20th century architecture of Paris. Course work will include a travel journal, a presentation related to topics and sites featured in the program, and a short final exam.

No knowledge of French is required. However, French majors and minors may take this course as an elective.
