Biology and Culture of Marine Animals in France

June 1 - July 1, 2009 (to be confirmed)

Learn about aquatic organisms' ecology and physiology from a French point-of-view. This unique study abroad experience will give students a good background in the biology and ecology of marine fish and invertebrates as well as practical knowledge on how to grow them in culture. The course will center around the understanding of environmental adaptation in marine coastal organisms. Classes will be taught at the Universite of Bretagne Occidentale in Brest, France. Besides state of the art laboratories, UBO has extensive animal holding and aquaculture facilities.

The program includes a two-day bus tour of Brittany. One of France's most rugged regions, Brittany is a fascinating mix of spectacular coastline, ancient towns, magical islands and inland woods. A Celtic duchy for more than one thousand years before its annexations to France in 1532, it is a land rich in culture, tradition and history. In addition, students will travel to several research institutes in the Brest area and attend a seminar session at each one.

Course: BIOL 494/594 (4 credits). Students performance in class will be based on conventional exams, lab practical exams and the quality of a written and oral presentation of their research project.
