Chinese Culture Yesterday and Today

June 2 - 19, 2012
Study Chinese language, literature, and culture with Towson University in summer 2012. Participants will explore Chinese culture and society through visits to both historical and contemporary sites and experience first-hand how Chinese arts and literature are embedded and influenced by China's natural landscapes. Students will gain an understanding of the integration of the traditional and the modern, the East and the West, and the local and the global through a series of comparative studies.
Participants will spend time in Beijing, Anhui, and Jiangxi and will take Chinese language classes to handle everyday life in China. Program highlights include excursions to the Forbidden City, Tian’anmen Square, and the Great Wall of China.
Note: Program requires strenuous walking and hiking.

Course: CHNS 494 and/or ASST 470
(3 - 6 credits). TU students may receive Honors credit for their study abroad experience.

- Schirokauer, Conrad and Miranda Brown. A Brief History of Chinese Civilization. 2nd edition. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, 2006. (ISBN-10: 0534643051). Price: New: $44.90 / Used: $5.77.
Cost: *3,450 includes academic credit, housing, health insurance, excursions, most meals, and airfare/transportation within China. Additional costs include $150 study abroad fee, $140 visa fee, three required textbooks, international airfare (approx. $1,600), any meals not included, and personal expenses. Note: International airfare is not included in the program cost.
*The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.
Eligibility: Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, a high school diploma or equivalent experience, and be at least 18 years old.
Application Process: Fill out the application and submit it to the TU Study Abroad Office. $250 deposit is required at time of application. Non-TU students must also submit a completed Non-Degree Enrollment Application.
Application Deadline: MARCH 15, 2012. Admission is on a rolling basis. Early application is advised as space is limited.
