TU Palucca Schule in Dresden, Germany

Located in the historic city of Dresden, The Palucca Schule Dresden was founded in 1925 by the dancer, choreographer and dance teacher Gret Palucca. It is now the only college of Fine Arts in Germany devoted exclusively to the study of dance and is offering degree courses in theatre dance, choreography, and dance teaching studies.

The school is a state recognized university level institution. The Dresden student services organization (Studentenwerk) include subsidized meals and a pass for travel on Dresden's public transport system.

The Palucca Schule is the only college of Fine Arts in Germany devoted exclusively to the study of dance. It is well-known as a home for free dance. It offers degrees in Professional Dance, Choreography, and Teaching.

Dresden:
Traditional home of the Saxon Kings, Dresden is located on the River Elbe. Noted for its architecture and amazing revival after the devastation of the second world war, Dresden is now experiencing a cultural rebirth and return to its roots as a center of innovation and originality. The United Nation's cultural organization UNESCO declared Dresden and the surrounding Elbe Valley to be a "World Heritage" site. Today, the 800 year old city is home to many educational institutions, major centers of research, and cultural societies and museums, yet maintains extensive green areas within the city limits. Prague is about 3 hours away by scenic river cruise, and Berlin is 3 hours by train.

Dresden is home to the 60 member Dresden Semperoper Ballet, the Tanzwoche and Tanzherbst Festivals, has the Tanzplan Dresden Project and is also the second home to The Forsythe Company which is in residence in Hellerau 3 - 4 months per year.

Subjects Offered:
Towson students will participate in the Professional Dance program, taking classes that will count towards their TU Dance degree and be equivalent to TU classes:

  • Level II and/or III Ballet (DANC 323 - 324, DANC 423 - 424)
  • Level II and/or III Modern (DANC 327 - 327, DANC 427 - 428)
  • Composition I (DANC 235)
  • Pointe (DANC 341)
  • Ballet Repertory (DANC 384)
  • Modern Repertory (DANC 383)
  • Company (if appropriate) (DANC 481)

At the completion of the Spring semester, there will be a performance in the city's historic Semperoper or the Schauspielhaus Theatres. Those who stay for the full academic year will have have the opportunity to audition for local dance companies.

Academic Year: September - July

Housing: Students live in local apartments with kitchen facilities with other TU students or local students. The Studentwerk Dresden has 29 different buildings with a variety of living accommodations - single or double rooms, shared or private bathroom, recently renovated or older apartments. Prices vary (average $230 per month). All accommodations are self-catering and cafeteria facilities are also available at Palucca Schule.

The Studentwerk Dresden has launched a new project called Students4Students to welcome you to Dresden. The initiative recruits international students studying at Palucca Schule to help new foreign students adjust to life at the school. New students are encouraged to contact a member of the Student4Students group prior to departure.

Costs:*
Fall: $2,000
Academic Year: $4,000

Cost includes tuition, health insurance, orientation. Additional costs include rent, food, passport, visa fees, airfare, personal spending money, and $300 study abroad fee. Students will be required to pay for German state-mandated insurance upon arrival.

*The Towson University Study Abroad Office reserves the right to make any necessary changes including adjustments in cost in the event that unforeseen circumstances arise.

Application Process: Minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 2.5. Students must have completed one semester of college level German or one year in high school to participate.

Submit the TU Palucca Schule in Germany Program application form to the TU Study Abroad Office by the deadline. TU alumni participants must also submit a completed Non-Degree Enrollment Application.
