POLICIES AFFECTING STUDENTS

Towson University Health Insurance Policy for International Student

  1. Policy
    All International students on temporary visa status (J-1 and F-1 visas) MUST have health insurance, which meets the university's minimum standards. International students will be automatically enrolled in the university-sponsored health insurance plan (SHP) unless a waiver request is submitted. The request will be approved for alternative insurance, which meets the minimum standards. Otherwise, the student will be billed for the SHP through the bursar's office. The waiver form is available through the Dowell Health Center.

  2. Waiver Standards for International Students
    1. Coverage for both accident and sickness
    2. Coverage for pre-existing conditions, or have a plan that has been in force long enough so that any waiting time for coverage of pre-existing conditions has been met.
    3. A minimum benefit of $50,000 (U.S.) per accident or sickness
    4. A $5,000 (U.S.) maximum out-of-pocket expense per policy year (i.e. insurance will pay 100% of covered costs after insured has paid $5,000)
    5. A $500 (U.S.) maximum deductible per policy year, credited towards the yearly out-of-pocket maximum of $5,000 above
    6. Prescription drug benefit
    7. Benefits for comprehensive reproductive health care, including maternity care, to be covered the same as for any illness
    8. Benefits for in-patient and out-patient care of mental and nervous disorders
    9. A $10,000 (US) minimum Medical Evacuation benefit (to return you to your country of residence if you are seriously ill)
    10. $7500 (US) minimum Repatriation benefit (in case of death, to return your remains to your country of residence)

  3. Waiver information To waive out this requirement, students must complete a waiver application and submit proof of comparable insurance that meets the minimum standards by the deadline: September 30 for Fall semester; February 28 for Spring semester.
