The Senate of the Student Government Association

The SGA Senate is the voting body of the Student Government. The senate is comprised of 25 senators, 4 of which must be freshmen and 1 of which must be a transfer student. Through legislation written, discussed, and voted on by the senate, Towson's student government is guided towards serving its undergraduate community.

 

Legislation

A Resolution is....

a piece of legislation representing the will of the undergraduate student body. By creating, discussing, and ultimately choosing whether or not to support given resolutions, the Towson University SGA Senate has a unique ability to determine how issues are represented by students to the entire university community.

A Finance Bill is...

a piece of legislation that seeks to disperse the student activity fund in a specific way. Throughout the Academic Year, Finance Bills are presented as legislation where a student organization requests supplemental funds to their current budget. Naturally, these proposals are called “Supplementals.” If your student group is seeking supplemental funds, please come visit the SGA office in UU226 and/or contact your SGA Senator.

Budgeted student organizations = two (2) Supplementals per term.

SGA affiliated organizations = one (1) Supplemental per term (unless FAC Policy strictly forbids it).

A Senate Bill is...

the SGA’s way of editing its own rules and/or procedures. For example, when edits are suggested to be made to the SGA By-Laws or Election Policy, a Senate Bill is presented to make such a change.

A Budget BIll is...

a piece of legislation establishing a budget. The budgets established are student organization budgets as well as the SGA annual budget

A Budget Change Request is...

a piece of legislation that allows a student group to move around money within their budget. Budget change requests that are less than $500 can be approved by the SGA Treasurer without going through the senate.
