Visiting Scholars/Lecturers Program

Visiting Scholars Program

The objective of the Visiting Scholars/Lecturers Program is to bring distinguished scholars from any country to campus to speak on issues of importance and interest to the academic community. A call for applications is made once a year during the Fall semester. Applications submitted at other times later in the year will be considered if any funds remain. Funding levels and restrictions vary for the two categories

.
Visiting Scholars Program

  • Scholar spends at least a full day on campus, gives a lecture of public interest and meets with students either formally or informally.
  • The topic should be of interest to the greater academic community, preferably an interdisciplinary topic.
  • The presentation must be publicized and open to the greater academic community.
  • The amount of the award is usually limited to $1000.
  • Funding may be used to cover transportation, lodging and honoraria.

Visiting Lecturers Program

  • Scholar visits campus for less than one day to give a single lecture and meet with students either formally or informally.
  • The topic may be of interest to a narrow group, not necessarily a multidisciplinary topic.
  • The presentation must be publicized and open to the greater academic community.
  • The amount of the award may be up to $500 and must supplement funding by the department or college for the scholar.

Important Requirements

o Normal classroom instructional activities, e.g., master classes.
o Towson University students, faculty, or other State of Maryland employees
    o Curriculum development.
    o Administrative projects.
  • The department inviting the scholar is responsible for all arrangements for the public program and the scholar's visit.

To apply for funds

  • Complete the Visiting Scholars/Lecturers Program Application. Both the Visiting Scholars Program and the Visiting Lecturers Program use the same application form. The form can be found here Visiting Scholar and Lecturer Application
  • Submit the application to the Associate Vice President for Resources and Planning by September 30 of each academic year.

To seek reimbursement of awards:

The TU Foundation does not make payment directly to the visitor. Instead, follow these steps:

1. Process payment through your department's stateside budget according to the Honoraria Guidelines and Procedures located at this site . http://www.towson.edu/facultystaffprograms/docs/080304Honoraria.pdf
2. When the payment appears on your FRS report, make a copy and send to the Associate Vice President of Resources and Planning. Include a copy of the award letter or email from the Visiting Scholars Committee. Be sure to identify clearly the budget code and subcode where the visitor expense was charged.
3. Provost's Budget Office will complete the TU Foundation's Disbursement Request Form, directing payment of funds to the budget code and subcode you identified.
