CFCs which stands for chloroflurocarbons are synthetic chemicals. They are not naturally produced. They are produced in laboratories and factories. CFCs are not all the same, they differ based on the amount of chlorine, flourine and carbon. Each CFC compound is identified by a number. CFCs were produced in the 1930s, because they are non toxic, corrosive or flammable. Another advantage of CFCs is that they do not react with other chemicals.
Today CFCs are maufactured and used in mass quantities
in most of the industrialized countries. This chemical is used to sterilize
medical equipment and
to clean circuit boards for computers. Some CFCS are used in aresol cans
such as hair sprays. When you drink out of a syrofoam cup you are using
CFCs. The main users of CFCs are refridgerators and air conditioners. CFCs
are used as a coolant to keep our food, homes and cars cool.
The ultraviolet radiation breaks down the chemical compound of CFCs. When this process occurs chlorine is released which destroys the ozone layer. One atom of chlorine can destroy 100,000 molecules of ozone layer.
