CARBON DIOXIDE: IS MY CAR TO BLAME?

Starting with the Industrial Revolution the global population started the mass release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Cardon dioxide is released into the atmosphere when coal, oil, and natural gases are burned. Due to the birth of the Industrial Revolution the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached 300 parts per million and rising. In over 160,000 years the carbon dioxide deposit has reached its highest level yet.

Svante Arrhenius, a swedish chemist was the first scientist to give validity to the greenhouse theories developed by Fourier and Tynall. Arrhenius calculated the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and concluded "that by changing the transparency of the atmosphere, could likely heat things up." He discovered that the doubling of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere might raise the temperature of the planet by 9F. Arrhenius the first Nobel Prize winner for chemistry, made a statement in an essay in the London, Edindurgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine that summed up his theory of carbon dioxide effecting global warming. "We are evaporating our coal mines into the air."

Since it has been determined that burning of fuel causes the release of carbon dioxide, your car can be blamed for the escape of carbon dioxide being released in the atmosphere. Trucks and Automobiles burn and release 60% of the oil in the United States each day. Due to the fact this is a two income generation the average number of automobiles in a family is two. This growing amount of ownership of cars increases the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmophere.

Other factors that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere are homes and factories. Homes release carbon dioxide with the burning of wood for fireplaces and the use of oil or gas to provide heat and energy for the home. Factories release a lot of carbon dioxide from their smoke stacks and the use of fossil fuel for energy as well. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, energy use and production makes up 57% of the carbon dioxide deposit in the atmosphere.

The anhiliation of the rain forest also produces carbon dioxide deposits. When trees are cut down and wood is left to decay carbon dioxide is slowly being released. When deforestation is achieved by the burning process carbon escapes much faster.

All the nations of the world can take responsibilty for global warming, though industrial nations are the larger contributors of carbon than developing nations. When we look at carbon emissions worldwide, the United States leads in the amount of carbon being released followed by Russia and Western Europe.
