Mr Hugo Paemon, the Head of the Delegation of the European Union in the United States cordially welcomes visitors to embark on a journey to learn or review the relationship that the United States and the European Union share together. During the early period in the history of European Unification, Charles de Gaulle of France led European Economic Community members to veto the United Kingdom's attempts to join the E.E.C. primarily in an effort to keep the United States' influence out of Europe. At the time, U.K. had extremely tight relations with the U.S.A., particularly in the field of arms supply and manufacturing. De Gaulle's fears of U.S. dominance prompted the French delegation to the E.E.C., who by then were playing a leading role in guiding the direction of the E.E.C., to block the U.K. 's entry and rally other member states to thwart Britain's attempts to join.
Now the European Union plays a much larger role in terms of international affairs and currently enjoys permanent observer status to the Organization of American States,
