Placement Testing
Placement
Testing staff administers the developmental testing program. All admitted freshmen and transfer students with fewer than
30 units will be required to demonstrate competence in the
basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics, unless they are
exempt
from placement testing.
Exemptions from Testing
After the
return of completed enrollment contracts to Towson University,
incoming students will receive notification from Placement
Testing about ACCUPLACER placement testing.
ACCUPLACER Information
Students will
receive a notification letter based on the SAT, ACT and/or
transfer information available to Towson University at that time.
The basic skills area(s) in which a student needs to be tested
will be indicated on the letter. Students who choose
to complete placement testing on campus must schedule a
testing session as soon as possible in order to obtain the most
favorable class schedule for their first term.
Students may
complete placement testing near their home at any college
willing to administer the Towson University ACCUPLACER test, or
at private Learning Centers that offer proctored testing---such
as Sylvan or Huntington. Due to
construction on the university campus, we encourage students to take
advantage of this remote testing.
Students whose
test scores indicate that their reading, writing, or mathematics
skills need improvement will be required to complete refresher
courses. Students who fail to complete the requirements by the
end of their second term are referred to an administrator for
formal consultation, transcript review, and mandatory advising.
Some of the
units for these refresher courses do not count toward
graduation, but will count toward status as a full-time student.
All refresher
courses are offered during the fall and spring terms.
Developmental math refresher courses are also offered during the summer
sessions. Students are allowed to retake a placement test in a basic skill area
if their score is within the minimum acceptable range for retest.
