Geology Major--Requirements and Core Courses


The Geology major requires 44-45 credits in geology and non-geology requirements completed with a grade equivalent of 2.00 or higher, plus 21-25 additional credits for specific tracks. The General Education requirements must also be completed: Category II.A.1 (8 credits) and Category I.C (4 credits) are satisfied by requirements in the Geology major; category II.A.2 is waived because of 8 credits in II.A.1. Geology majors are advised to take either WRIT 312 History of Science or CHEM 301 Professional Ethics for Scientists to fulfill Category I.D, Advanced Composition.

GEOL 489- Introduction to Research (1)
GEOL 492- Introduction to Field Methods (2)
GEOL 499- Regional Geology (2) [pre-req: GEOL 489]
CHEM 110-111- General Chemistry I and II (4,4)
MATH 273- Calculus I (4)
One of:
    MATH 274- Calculus II (recommended for those planning graduate study) or
    MATH 231- Basic Statistics (3) or
    COSC 165- Virtual Basic (3)
PHYS 211 or 241- General Physics I (4)
