The New York Times Knowledge Network offers a wide range of distinctive adult and continuing education opportunities online, including individual courses, seminars, certificate programs and Webcasts. African Art and Aesthetics

Fee: $149 and $99 (Osher Member-Any Institute)
Note: Osher Institutes may register a group for the online course. A group registration costs $500 and includes up to 10 participants. For each additional person over 10 the cost is reduced to $50 per person. If other organizations would like to do group registrations these are available so please let us know.

Description: This self-paced course is for art lovers who wish to learn more about art from the African Continent. It is based on the philosophy that art is a universal language and helps the participant to familiarize him/herself with lesser known “objet d’art” and artifacts. The course addresses four major issues of concern central to the study of African Art: (1) Problems and Difficulties encountered with the study of African Art; (2) the Role and Characteristics of African Masks; (3) different Materials used in African Art; (4) the Impact of African Art on Modern European Art. This dynamic online course will also feature a series of self-paced lessons enriched with images, multimedia, New York Times content and specially crafted lectures. Students will be able to discuss questions related to weekly topics and interact with each other in lively forum discussions.
