Maryland’s Participation in the USGS
The ‘National Map’ Project

The National Map is intended to ensure public access to current, accurate, nationally consistent digital data and topographic maps derived from the data via a seamless, continuously maintained set of public domain geographic base information. Through National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Cooperative Agreement Program grants, and partnerships with the Maryland State Geographic Information Committee, the Center for GIS at Towson University (CGIS) serves as Maryland’s portal to The National Map.

wild rice

Wild Rice

In 1999 Maryland DNR began promoting expansion of wild rice in the Jug Bay area of the upper Patuxent River. To visually depict the decline and subsequent resurgence of this important native marsh grass species, CGIS mapped stands of wild rice along a seven-mile stretch of the upper Patuxent River between Prince George’s and Anne Arundel Counties for four different growing seasons.

SOR

Sex Offender Registry

The Center for GIS at Towson University (CGIS) worked with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services to increase the utility of the registry by adding a mapping component. The resulting application is a publicly available map-enabled Web site that offers access to several userfriendly Internet mapping tools. Individuals can easily find out if anyone convicted of sexual offenses lives in close proximity to their home, shopping, school, or work communities.
