CGIS and Maryland’s Spatial Data Infrastructure
Geographic information is a capital asset and a costly resource. Maryland’s Spatial Data Infrastructure will save time and money.
For almost a decade, a partnership of CGIS and the Maryland State Geographic Information Committee (MSGIC) has been producing locally and nationally useful GIS, metadata, mapping, and mapping resource products through National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) cooperative agreement grants.
In 2006 the partnership received a NSDI grant to develop Strategic and Business Plans for GIS Coordination in Maryland. The result is Maryland’s Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI), which will ultimately coordinate GIS resources. Besides advancing Maryland’s role in the NSDI through regional data development and acquisition, and data sharing agreements, MSDI will also enhance efficiency through economy of scale.
CGIS and MSGIC are actively involved in statewide data projects.
- The Maryland Cooperative Centerline Program managed by the State Highway Administration streamlines the process for sharing roadway data with local governments. Roadway data is needed for emergency management and response and numerous other essential business and management processes. The Cooperative Centerline program is also the basis for one of Maryland’s contributions to The National Map.
- The Maryland Orthoimagery Acquisition Partnership consolidates expenditures for aerial photography into a single, statewide, coordinated purchase. A process for sharing orthoimagery data is also one of Maryland’s contributions to The National Map.
