 OCTH 103 LEISURE AND HEALTH ISSUES IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY (3)

The history and meaning of leisure activity, contemporary issues, and the importance of

leisure to health maintenance. Strategies for personally healthy activity. GenEd II.B.3.

 

OCTH 205 ALTERNATIVE AND COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH CARE (3)

Comparison of Western and non-Western health practices. Cultural and ethical issues

impacting health care. Legislative and reimbursement influence. GenEd II.D.

 

OCTH 211 PHILOSOPHY OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (3)

The relation of occupation to health, concentrating on a variety of types of occupation,

and illustrating the effects of health and ill health on occupational behavior. GenEd I.B.

 

OCTH 213 SMALL GROUP DYNAMICS (3)

A study of small groups used in therapeutic or health education settings.

Lectures will examine group members’ and leaders’ roles, stages of a group’s life,

theory of developmental groups,  and the structure and function of a variety of small

groups used in therapy, education and community settings. Participatory experiences

will supplement lectures to promote personal communication and effectiveness in groups.

Prerequisites: SOCI 101, PSYC 101.

 

OCTH 216 LIFE SPAN ADAPTATION AND OCCUPATIONS (4)

Interactions of biological, sensorimotor, and psychosocial aspects of development with

environmental and cultural factors; occupational roles and processes of change.

Prerequisites: BIOL 110, PSYC 101,SOCI 101, ENGL 102.

 

OCTH 217 ANALYSIS OF OCCUPATIONAL PERFORMANCE I (4)

Beginning development of occupational performance skills necessary for clinical practice.

Corequisites: OCTH 213 and OCTH 216.

 

OCTH 218 ANALYSIS OF OCCUPATIONAL PERFORMANCE II (3)

Laboratory experience to develop students’ knowledge of the skills necessary in

therapeutic media, technology application, job analysis and health maintenance.

Prerequisites: OCTH 213, OCTH 216, OCTH 217.

 

OCTH 221 CLINICAL KINESIOLOGY (3)

 Principles of biomechanics, muscle physiology, joint structure and muscle function,

emphasizing palpation of anatomical structures and analysis of movement.

Prerequisites: PHYS 202, BIOL 213, and to be taken concurrently with OCTH 217.

 

 

Upper Division

 

OCTH 301 GENETICS, HEALTH AND SOCIETY (3) Sociopolitical, economic, and ethical

issues of the Human Genome Project and genetic research. Health effects of genetic

disorders and impact on lifestyles and occupation.

Prerequisite: BIOL 110. GenEd II.A.2.

 

OCTH 313 PHYSICAL FUNCTION: NEUROLOGICAL CONDITIONS (3)

Etiology, clinical course, management and prognosis of neurological conditions. Theory

and practice applied to clients.

Prerequisites: OCTH 211, OCTH 218, OCTH 221; BIOL 214, BIOL 427; to be taken

concurrently with OCTH 319 and OCTH 317.

 

OCTH 314 PSYCHOSOCIAL DYSFUNCTION (5)

Identification of the etiology, clinical course, management, and prognosis of psychiatric

disorders.  Fundamentals of occupational therapy theory, assessment and intervention for

psychosocial dysfunction.

Prerequisites: OCTH 211, OCTH 213, OCTH 218, PSYC 361, and to be taken

concurrently with OCTH 320.

 

OCTH 317 PHYSICAL FUNCTION: MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS (3)

Etiology, clinical course, management and prognosis of musculoskeletal conditions.

Theory and practice applied to clients.

Prerequisites: OCTH 211, OCTH 218, OCTH 221; BIOL 214, BIOL427; to be taken

concurrently with OCTH 313 and OCTH 319.

 

OCTH 318 INDEPENDENT STUDY (1-6)

Directed independent study designed to provide students with an indepth investigation of

an area or problem specific to occupational therapy. Consultation and supervision with

designated faculty members and/or clinical practitioners. May be repeated for a maximum

of 6 units.

Prerequisites: undergraduate major in Occupational Therapy, permission of department.

 

OCTH 319 PHYSICAL DYSFUNCTION CLINICAL (3)

Laboratory and clinical practice in specific evaluation and treatment techniques in

physical disabilities.

Prerequisites: OCTH 211, OCTH 218, OCTH 221, BIOL214, BIOL 427; to be taken

concurrently with OCTH 313 and OCTH 317.

 

OCTH 320 PSYCHOSOCIAL FUNCTION CLINICAL (3)

Laboratory and clinical practice in specific evaluation and treatment techniques in

psychosocial occupational therapy.

Prerequisites: OCTH 211, OCTH 218, OCTH 213, PSYC 361;

to be taken concurrently with OCTH 314.

 

OCTH 323 GERONTOLOGICAL OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (3)

Interventions addressing the aging process and pathology in older adults.

Prerequisites: OCTH 211, OCTH 216, OCTH 218.

 

OCTH 325 PEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (4)

Etiology, clinical course, management and prognosis of developmental and learning

disabilities.  Theory and practice applied to children and adolescents.

Prerequisites: OCTH 313, OCTH 314, OCTH 315, OCTH 319, OCTH

320; to be taken concurrently with OCTH 326.

 

OCTH 326 PEDIATRIC CLINICAL (2)

Laboratory and clinical practice in specific evaluation and treatment techniques in

pediatric occupational therapy.

Co-requisite: OCTH 325.

 

OCTH 412 O.T. HEALTH PROMOTION INITIATIVES IN THE COMMUNITY: CLINICAL (3)

Theory, practice and clinical experience to foster healthy development of individuals,

families and communities. 

Prerequisites: OCTH 313, OCTH 314, OCTH 319, OCTH 320, OCTH 323.

 

OCTH 428 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ORGANIZATIONS IN MODERN SOCIETY (4)

Administration of programs within service delivery systems, considering technological,

societal and economic trends. 

Prerequisites: OCTH 213, HLTH 207.

 

OCTH 430 RESEARCH METHODS IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (3)

Guided independent research in topics related to occupational therapy theory and practice.

Presentation of introductory materials on research methods.

Prerequisites: MATH 237, OCTH 313, OCTH 319, OCTH 314, OCTH 320. GenEd I.D.

 

OCTH 435 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY INTERNSHIP I (6)

Fieldwork experience (470 units) in service delivery and management. Focus on

professionalism and entry level competency.

Prerequisites: OCTH 313, 314, 317, 319, 320, 323 and permission of department.

Permit required.

 

OCTH 436 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY INTERNSHIP II (6)

Culminating fieldwork experience (470 units) in delivery and management with differing

populations and service delivery models.

Prerequisites: OCTH 435 and permission of department. Permit required.

 

OCTH 437 SPECIALTY INTERNSHIP (4-6)

Fieldwork experience to meet the student’s special interests. Graded S/U. May be

repeated for a maximum of 6 units.

Prerequisites: OCTH 436 and permission of department. Permit required.

 

OCTH 470-479 [570-579] SPECIAL TOPICS IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (1-3)

Designed to explore topics of special interest in the theory and practice of occupational

therapy. May be repeated for a maximum of 3 units provided a different topic is covered.

Prerequisite: permission of department.

OCTH 536 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY INTERNSHIP II (6)

Culminating fieldwork experience (470 hrs.) in delivery and management with differing

populations and service delivery models.

Prerequisites: OCTH 435 and consent of the department; permit required.

 

OCTH 570-579 SPECIAL TOPICS IN OCCUPATIONALTHERAPY (1-3)

Designed to explore topics of special interest in the theory and practice of occupational

therapy.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of 3 credits.

 

OCTH 603 ISSUES IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (3)

Analysis of current issues in occupational therapy.

Prerequisite: Admission to Occupational Therapy master’s program.

 

OCTH 604 ACADEMIC AND CLINICAL EDUCATION (3)

College/university teaching and clinical supervision strategies for the preparation of

professionals in clinical disciplines.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

 

OCTH 605 MANAGING HUMAN RESOURCES IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (3)

Issues and trends: in leadership, decision making styles, productivity, professional

development recruitment and retention, and performance appraisal systems.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

 

OCTH 611 ADVANCED THEORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF OCCUPATION (3)

Analysis of the theories and philosophical assumptions underlying occupation.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

 

OCTH 612 O.T. HEALTH PROMOTION INITIATIVES IN THE COMMUNITY (3)

Theory and practice of occupational therapy in health promotion in the community with

special emphasis on the cultural context of the community.  Integrates knowledge and

skills for the practice of occupational therapy services, which fosters healthy development;

prevent health problems; maintain optimal function; and develop occupational performance

skills of individuals, families, and communities.

Prerequisite:  OCTH 611 or permission of instructor.

 

OCTH 613 ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS IN OCCUPATION-BASED PRACTICE (3)

Application of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Prerequisite: Consent of

instructor.

 

OCTH 621 GERIATRIC REHABILITATION (3)

Older adult assessment and rehabilitation within a variety of health care systems.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

 

OCTH 623 EVALUATION IN PEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (3)

Theory and practice of evaluation in the area of pediatric occupational therapy.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

 

OCTH 628 CONTEMPORARY OCCUPATIONALTHERAPY PRACTICE (3)

This course combines classroom preparation with a directed independent study focused

on expanding and developing skills in an area of occupational therapy practice of special

interest to the student.

Prerequisite: Completion of one level II fieldwork or consent of instructor.

 

OCTH 631 COMMUNITY GERONTOLOGY (3)

Planning and consulting for adult community programs.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

 

OCTH 633 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY TREATMENT IN PEDIATRICS (3)

Advanced treatment principles for developmental disabilities from the neurodevelopmental

viewpoints, including provisions for care of children in health delivery systems, including

the school.

Prerequisite: OCTH 623.

 

OCTH 637 SPECIALTY INTERNSHIP (4-6) A supervised occupational therapy fieldwork

experience with a population of special interest. Permit required.

Prerequisites: OCTH 536 and consent of department.

 

OCTH 670-675 SPECIAL TOPICS IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (1-3)

Study of selected topics in occupational therapy.

Prerequisites: Vary with each topic, consent of instructor.

 

OCTH 678 ASSESSMENT THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN (3)

Examination, selection, administration, and evaluation of a variety of measurement tools

used in Occupational Therapy Practice.

 

OCTH 691 DIRECTED READINGS IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (1-3)

Guided review of literature to explore in-depth subjects related to occupational therapy

theory and practice.

Prerequisite: Graduate standing.

 

OCTH 692 INDEPENDENT STUDY (1-6)

In-depth investigation specific to area of interest in Occupational Therapy.

Prerequisite: Consent of department.

 

OCTH 781 GRADUATE SEMINAR IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (3)

Graduate project or thesis proposal preparation with feedback and discussion.

Prerequisites: Admission to Occupational Therapy master’s degree program, PSYC 687

and consent of department.

 

OCTH 880 GRADUATE PROJECT IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (3)

Implementation and documentation of a project designed in OCTH 781 that is oriented

toward the application of specific techniques in occupational technology.

Prerequisites: OCTH 781, successful completion of the graduate examination and consent

of project adviser.

 

OCTH 885 PROJECT CONTINUATION (1)

Continuation of graduate project.

Prerequisite: Previous registration for project work.

 

OCTH 897 THESIS (6)

Original investigation using an acceptable research method and design conducted under

 the direction of a faculty member.

Prerequisites: OCTH 781, successful completion of the graduate examination

and consent of thesis chairperson.

 

OCTH 898 THESIS (3)

The previous course, OCTH 897, taken over two consecutive

semesters.

 

OCTH 899 THESIS CONTINUUM (1)

OSC 742 ORIGINS AND EVOLUTION OF OCCUPATIONAL SCIENCE (3)

Examination of the history of occupation and occupational performance constructs.

Prerequisite: OCTH 611.

 

OSC 744 OCCUPATION AND HUMAN LIFE (3) Examination of conceptual models and

research that apply occupation based interventions to individual and family practice.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

 

OSC 746 OCCUPATIONS AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN COMMUNITIES AND SYSTEMS(3)

An examination of community health and quality of life from an occupational science

perspective.

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

 

OSC 890 QUALITATIVE RESEARCH: OCCUPATION AND LIFE NARRATIVE (3)

Qualitative methods used in the study of occupation and other related social sciences.

Prerequisite: OCTH 611, OCTH 613, or consent of instructor.

 

OSC 891 INDEPENDENT STUDY IN OCCUPATIONALSCIENCE (1-6)

In-depth investigation and development of scholarly product. 

Prerequisites: Consent of Post Professional program director.

 

OSC 892 DIRECTED READINGS IN OCCUPATIONAL

SCIENCE (3) Readings in selected topic in occupational science. Special permit

required. Prerequisites: At least one 700 level OSC course and consent

 of post professional director.

 

OSC 895 APPLIED PROJECT: EVERYDAY LIFE AND DIMENSIONS OF OCCUPATION (3)

Design and implementation of an applied research project in occupation that has the

potential to be developed into a dissertation topic.

Prerequisites: OSC 742, 744, 746, 890, and other 700 or above quantitative statistics

course. Majors only, permit required.

 

OSC 997 DISSERTATION RESEARCH (1-9)

Design, implementation and documentation of focused study of applied occupation in

community systems. Must be repeated for a minimum of 12 total credits until dissertation

is complete in order to meet continual registration policy. Permit required.

Prerequisites: OSC Applied Project.
