General Application Process

Criteria and Procedures for Combined B.S./M.S. Applicants

Screening for admission is based on a review of:

  • student's GPA
  • admission essay
  • letters of recommendation
  • required volunteer experience
  • Completion of the following four perquisites with a B- or better:  Writing for a Liberal Arts Education,  Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, Biology for the Health Professions (does not apply to high school seniors applying for early admission)

First Level of Screening

Initial screening, which is based on GPA, will occur immediately after March 1 for applicants who have complete files. Overall GPAs will be computed. The top 60 applicants will be identified.

Second Level of Screening

The Department Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science's Admissions Committee will review documents of the top 60 applicants and evaluate these applicants based upon their GPAs, essays, and references. The top candidates from the pool of applicants will be selected for admission.

A maximum of 25 percent of the group of applicants selected will be out-of-state students, unless qualified in-state students are unavailable.

Selection of the top candidates will be completed by April 15. Students who are not accepted into the program will be placed on a waiting list. The top candidate on the list will be notified if a place becomes available in the class. If that candidate can not accept the place, the next candidate is notified. This list is maintained until the end of the drop-add period in the fall. The waiting list does not carry over to the following year. Potential applicants who remain interested may reapply the following year, however, the application must be resubmitted and the prerequisite file updated.

Criteria and Procedures for M.S. Applicants

Professional master's degree applicants are screened after the Graduate School receives all application materials and after the supplemental application materials for the master's degree in occupational therapy program have been received by the application deadline each year.

ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS MUST BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL

Master's degree applicants are screened using the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate grade point average (GPA)
  • Admission Prerequisite Course GPA
  • Three Graduate School Recommendation forms
  • Graduate Occupational Therapy  Admission Essay

First Level Screening Procedures
Initial screening will occur after February 1st for applicants who have complete files. GPAs will be computed and used to identify the top 60 applicants.

Second Level of Screening Procedures
The Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science Admissions Committee will review documents of the top 60 applicants and evaluate these applicants based upon their GPAs, prerequisite course GPAs, essays, and recommendations. From this pool of applicants, the top candidates will be selected for admission.

No more than 25 percent of the applicants selected for admission may be out-of-state students, unless qualified in-state students are unavailable.

Selection of the top candidates is completed by the second week of March and applicants will be notified after this date.

After May 1st, a waiting list of the other applicants in this pool of 60 who were not accepted is formed. These applicants are rank ordered for possible admission in the event that a place becomes available in this admitted class. This list is maintained until the end of the drop-add registration period in the fall semester.

Early Admission to the Major

High school seniors, current Towson University students, and transfer students with an overall grade point average of 3.4 may be considered for early admission to the Combined BS/MS Program in Occupational Therapy. Early admission will result in “Guaranteed Admission Status” which will ensure the student a place in the program with the next class admitted. In order to receive Guaranteed Admission Status, applicants need to complete the application process (see Application and Catalog) and be selected by the Program's Admissions Committee. In order to enter the program, students must meet all application criteria, including prerequisite grade requirements and be admitted to the University.

Beginning October 1st early admission applicants will be admitted on a first-come, first-served rolling admission basis. Applications will continue to be accepted until all available spaces are filled. No more than 50 percent of the class will be filled with early admit students. Applicants will be informed of the status of their application within 30 days. Students interested in pursuing early admission under this policy must contact Robert Karp, Admissions and Placement Coordinator, 410-704-2653.
