Assistant Professor in Music Education

Position: Assistant Professor, tenure track in secondary general/choral music education.
Appointment: Ten-month appointment with the possibility of additional summer compensation for teaching. This position requires a teaching load of 9 contact hours per semester in the first 3 years and is contingent on funding at the time of hire. Starting date: August 2012.
Qualifications:
• Earned doctorate in music education (conferred by August, 2012)
• Minimum of three years demonstrated successful secondary teaching experience in general and choral music, grades 7-12;
• Knowledge, understanding, and application of technology utilized in music instruction, including audio and video editing;
• Demonstrated ability to work and teach in team situations;
• Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in music education for the 21st century.
Expectations:
• Teaching load is 3/3 during the first three years, based on balance of assignments thereafter;
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in secondary general/choral music education;
• Observe, mentor, and supervise students in field experiences and internships;
• Ability to integrate principles of Dalcroze, Orff, or Kodaly;
• Additional teaching duties dependent on qualifications of applicant and departmental needs, which may include teaching a choral conducting course and/or direction of a choral ensemble;
• Maintain an active and collaborative role within the Music Education Division and Department of Music;
• Develop and maintain a regional and national profile within the profession, and actively pursue a scholarly/creative agenda;
• Be actively involved in department recruitment activities;
• Actively engage in the university, college, and department’s system of shared governance;
• Develop and maintain contacts with regional teachers, school systems, and professional organizations.
• Interdisciplinary experience or interest is a plus. Evidence or interest in securing external funding is preferred.
