USM Hagerstown Nursing Program
The Department of Nursing at Towson University offers a bachelor's degree in nursing at the University System of Maryland (USM) Hagerstown Center. Both the nursing basic program as well as the RN to BS degree for current RN students are offered at the Hagerstown Center. In addition, a master's degree in nursing is offered.
The nursing program curriculum at the USM Hagerstown Center is identical to that offered at Towson University. However, all nursing classes are held at the USM Hagerstown Center and all or almost all clinical sites are in the Western Maryland area. Course work includes online study. Students accepted into the Nursing Program at this location are expected to complete all nursing program requirements through the Hagerstown Center. Students will be responsible for housing and transportation while attending the program.
Admission to the Major
Admission to the major is contingent upon the student being screened and admission being offered to the applicant by the Department of Nursing and Towson University. Students are eligible to apply for admission to the Nursing Program at the Hagerstown Center only if they have completed a minimum of 42 undergraduate units, including at least four laboratory sciences and ENGL 102 by the January 15 application deadline for the fall semester and August 15 application deadline for the spring semester. Only one grade below a grade equivalent of 2.00 is allowed in Prerequisite or General Education/Core courses, and no more than two courses may be repeated. A minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale is required; however, achievement at the 3.00 level in itself does not guarantee admission to the program. `
Students must complete 11 prerequisite courses prior to beginning the nursing major. As long as students meet the minimum requirement to apply, it is not necessary to have all of the following prerequisites completed before submitting your nursing application; however, admission into the major is contingent on the completion of all 11 prerequisite courses before enrolling in nursing courses.

Nursing Major requirements are the only Towson University courses offered at the Hagerstown Center. All prerequisite courses and general education/core courses must be completed either at Towson University or another institution prior to beginning the nursing program at the Hagerstown Center. Nursing students are required to complete a Statistics course prior to enrolling in Nursing 435 Professional Issues III: Research in Nursing. Statistics will not be offered at the Hagerstown Center; thus, students should plan to complete their Statistics courses at Towson University or another institution.
Transfer Students
Transfer students receive an official evaluation of transferable credits from the Office of Admissions after accepting Towson University’s offer of admission (by returning the Enrollment Contract and fee).
We recommend that students planning to transfer to Towson University to major in Nursing use ARTSYS to help plan a program of study. ARTSYS is a Web-based system used by Maryland community colleges and four-year institutions. ARTSYS provides students with information that can facilitate the transfer from one college to another by including course equivalences among Maryland public colleges. In addition, ARTSYS provides suggested two-year curricula referred to as Recommended Transfer Programs (RTPs). RTPs provide students with requirements and information for specific TU majors. They also identify the introductory courses for those majors.
