IRS Tax Return and Tax Account Copy Requests
You can contact the IRS to request copies of tax return information by
requesting a tax return transcript and/or a tax account transcript.
Tax Return Transcript
- A tax return transcript is a copy of your tax return.
- It shows most line items from the original tax return filed, along
with any accompanying forms, such as Form W-2, and schedules.
- It does not include any adjustments or changes later filed to amend
your return.
- Copies are generally available for the current and past six years.
- There is a fee of $39.00 for each tax year requested.
- To request a copy by telephone call 1-800-829-1040.
- To request a copy by mail, follow these steps:
- Complete and mail Form 4506 Request
for Copy of Tax Return
- Attach a check or money order in the amount of $39.00 for each
tax year
- Follow the mailing instructions on the form for your area
- Make the check payable to the "United States Treasury"
- Allow 60 calendar days to receive your copies
Tax Account Transcript
- A tax account transcript shows any adjustments either you or the
IRS made after your tax return was filed.
- It includes the basic data, including marital status, type of return
filed, adjusted gross income and taxable income.
- It also contains information on the financial status of the tax account,
such as payments, penalty assessments, and adjustments made by you or
the IRS.
- Transcript requests are avilable for the current and three prior calendar
years.
- There is no fee for transcript requests.
- To request by telephone a copy of your tax account information call
1-800-829-1040.
