Tenor
Gran Wilson, a native of Bessemer, Alabama, has distinguished himself
as a leading interpreter of the “bel canto” repertoire through a career
spanning thirteen countries on four continents and four decades.
He has appeared with the New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera,
Houston Grand Opera, Australian Opera, Netherlands Opera, Oper
Frankfurt, L’Opéra de Nice, and Belgium’s Vlaamse Oper to name
but a few. On the concert stage he has sung with the Boston
Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Trondheim
Symphony, and National Symphony. He has been featured in the
Mostly Mozart Festival, Lincoln Center Festival, Edinburgh Festival,
and Spoletto Festival. Mr. Wilson has recorded on the Delos
label, and can be seen on Kultur Video with Maestro Richard Bonynge in
the Australian Opera’s renowned production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Mr. Wilson was chosen to open seasons by Beverly Sills, Richard
Bonynge, Teatro di San Carlo Lisboa, and chosen by American composer
Ned Rorem to debut his Swords and Plowshares
with the Boston Symphony. Mr. Wilson has been a frequent
performer on NPR, and seen on PBS in “Live From Lincoln Center.”
He has been seen on the CBS Morning Show, interviewed for PBS’s “All
Things Considered” and seen on the American Armed Services Television
Network worldwide. He has been the subject of articles in Opera
News, Classical Singer, Harper’s Bazaar, Reader’s Digest, and Opera
Magazine.
Locally, Mr. Wilson has performed with the Baltimore Opera, Opera
Vivente, the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, And the Washington National
Opera. While maintaining a busy performing schedule, Mr. Wilson
begins his tenth year on faculty this coming fall at both Towson
University and the University of Maryland, College Park.
