Michael
A. Poissant holds a BM in Music Education degree and Performers
Certificate from the Crane School of Music at S.U.N.Y. Potsdam and a MM
in Trombone Performance from Bowling Green State University. While at
Bowling Green State University, he taught Jazz History Courses to
Undergraduate Jazz Studies majors and non-majors and held both the
Graduate Trombone Assistantship and Graduate Jazz Assistantship. He
also led two jazz combos and performed with the Graduate Brass
Ensemble, Bowling Green Philharmonia, and Honors Trombone Quartet. Some
of his trombone teachers have included Donald Schleicher (University of
Michigan), Mark Hartman (Crane School of Music), Brett Zvacek (Crane
School of Music), Paul Hunt (Bowling Green State University), Richard
Myers (Buffalo Philharmonic), Donald Miller (Buffalo Philharmonic), and
the late Milton Stevens (National Symphony Orchestra).
Since 1999 Poissant has been lead trombonist with Moodswings Big Band
in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2008 he performed with Moodswings for over
800 guests at the White House Congressional Ball hosted by President
George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. He also performed with
Moodswings for the 2000 and 2004 Presidential Inaugural Galas and for
Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich’s Inaugural Gala. In addition to
Moodswings, Poissant has performed with the Charleston Symphony
Orchestra (Charleston, SC), Basilica of the Assumption Brass, Lyric
Band of Hanover, Baltimore Sinfonietta, Hank Levy Legacy Big Band, Whit
Williams Big Band, Don Junker Big Band, and his own trombone quartet,
The Touchstone Trombones.
Poissant is currently a Baltimore County Instrumental Music Teacher and
holds K-12 Music Educator’s Certification with Administrator I and
Administrator II Certificate Endorsements. In 2007 he designed and
presented to Baltimore County Music Educators a comparative data study
of music students that showed the effects of lesson pullout programs on
standardized test scores. In 2001 he presented the topic of his Masters
document, “The Roles and Responsibilities of Brass Players in Jazz Big
Bands,” at the Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington DC.
Poissant resides in Reisterstown, Maryland with his wife, Sharon, who
is also a Baltimore County Instrumental Music Teacher and five children.
