Pianist
Eva Mengelkoch has performed extensively in chamber music ensembles,
solo recitals, and as an accompanist on modern and historic keyboard
instruments in North America, Central America, India, and throughout
western and central Europe. Venues include
Saint-Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Mendelssohn-Haus in Leipzig,
Tata-Theatre in Bombay, Liszt-Academy in Budapest, Teatro Nacional in
Managua, and Chicago’s Cultural Center.
Mengelkoch has recorded for the Beoton and Centaur labels. Her latest
CD, released in 2009, features sonatas by Joseph Haydn performed on Hammerklavier
and modern piano; it is included in the Naxos Music Library and has
been broadcast on public radio stations in the United States, Canada,
and Europe. Early Music America describes her artistry as “formidable on both instruments, technically brilliant and poetically distinctive.”
Recent engagements include a concert at the Mendelssohn-Year-Festival
in Leipzig, a recital on Liszt’s grand piano at the Bayreuther
Sommerklavierfestival, and a performance with soprano Julianne Baird at
the Gotham Early Music Showcase in New York City. She founded and
continues to serve as the artistic director of Baltimore’s Cylburn
Chamber Music Series.
Mengelkoch studied with British pianist Michael Roll at the Folkwang
Hochschule in Essen, and received her graduate degrees at Indiana
University as a student of Leonard Hokanson (piano) and Elisabeth
Wright (fortepiano and harpsichord).
She is a recipient of a 2008 Performing Artist Award from the Maryland
State Arts Council. In 1999 she joined the music faculty at
Towson University where she teaches piano, accompanying, keyboard
literature, and piano pedagogy; she also serves as the coordinator of
the keyboard division.
