Thomas Ciufo

Thomas CiufoThomas Ciufo is a sound artist, composer, improviser, and researcher working at the intersection of electroacoustic performance, interactive instrument design, and emerging digital technologies. Thomas holds a bachelors degree in Music Composition from the University of Northern Colorado and a Ph.D. in Computer Music and New Media from Brown University. 

Ongoing sound works include, three meditations for prepared piano and computer, eighth nerve, an improvisational piece for prepared electric guitar and computer, and beginners mind for sound maker and computer-mediated performance system. Recent festival presentations or performances include Visione Sonoras in Mexico City, the Enaction in Arts conference in Grenoble, the International Society for Improvised Music conference in Ann Arbor, the Extensible Electric Guitar Festival in Worcester, the NIME conference in Genova, the ICMC / Ear to the Earth conference in NYC, and the 2000 + 10 Symposium in Belfast.

Prior to Towson University, Thomas taught courses, managed the studios, and conducted research for the Computer Music and Multimedia program at Brown University. He spent a year at Arizona State University as a postdoctoral researcher in the Arts, Media, and Engineering Program where he co-directed the AMP performance ensemble and contributed to the K-12 Mediated Learning group. He also served for three years as the Sherman Fairchild Artist-in-Residence in Arts and Technology at Smith College and taught digital media and sound art courses at College of the Holy Cross.
