Registration Information

We encourage all students to make application to the Graduate School and to register well in advance of the course. If enrollment is low, there is the chance that the course will be canceled.

For New Students: You must have an Application for Graduate Study at Towson University form on file at the Graduate Office before registering. This can be completed by starting at the Graduate School link here.

For New and Continuing Students: With your TU PeopleSoft ID number, you may register for summer,  On-line registration can he found here.

DOK CERTIFICATE WORKSHOPS

**MUED 630 Dalcroze, Orff, and Kodaly: Principles and Techniques for the Music Classroom I (2) / June 25-29 / 9:00a-4:00p / Ruviella-Knorr
Principles of Dalcroze eurythmics, Orff and Kodaly techniques in elementary and middle school programs. Appropriate for vocal-general and instrumental teachers. Prerequisite: bachelor’s degree in music or music education.

**MUED 631 Dalcroze, Orff, and Kodaly: Principles and Techniques for the Music Classroom II (2) / July 16-20 / 9:00a-4:00p / Crowell
Principles of beginning and intermediate level Dalcroze, Orff and Kodaly techniques in the vocal-general and instrumental program. Exploring practical techniques and materials using an eclectic approach to teaching concepts and skills. Prerequisite: MUED 630 or consent of instructor.

**MUED 634 Kodaly Techniques (2) / July 23-27 / 9:00a-4:00p / Pippert-Brown
Methods and materials incorporating sight singing exercises, rhythm and movement, folk songs and singing games within an eclectic curriculum.  Prerequisite: MUED 630 or consent of instructor.

MUED 635 Dalcroze, Orff, and Kodaly Pedagogy & Curriculum Development (3) / July 30-August 3; Aug 6-8 / 9:00a-4:00p / Ruviella-Knorr (and Delaney and Huggins)
Teaching the pedagogy of musical elements and concepts using Dalcruze, Orff, and Kodaly techniques and materials.  Prerequisite(s): MUED 631, MUED 632, MUED 633, and MUED 634; or consent of instructor.

WORKSHOPS

MUED 680 West African Song, Drum and Dance Level I (2) / June 18-22 / 9:00a-4:00p / Persic
This exciting “hands-on” course introduces participants to traditional music and dance of Ghana, West Africa.  Participants will develop an understanding of life in a West African community, and explore ways to teach about this vibrant culture to students through music and art activities.  Music and dance will be taught aurally, in the West African tradition, using authentic instruments provided by the instructor.  Previous experience is not necessary, but some musical understanding would be helpful.  Participants should be dressed for movement.

MUED 682 Creative Music Technology Projects (2) / June 18-22 / 9:00a-4:00p / McCabe
This course will explore creative ways to integrate technology into the music classroom.  Completion of projects with Mac laptops, iPads, as well as interacting with SmartBoard technology is an integral part of the course.

MUED 681 Introduction to Steel Band (2) / June 25-29 / 9:00a-4:00p / Wharton
Experience performing in the ‘steel band’ and gain the resources to develop this popular medium in your school setting as well as literature and performance practices associated with this medium.  Class meets at Catonsville High School.  Contact Mr. James Wharton for further information.

MUED 672 Brass Refresher (2) / July 2-6 / 9:00a-5:30p / Goetschius
This workshop offers a comprehensive review of the pedagogy of brass instruments with an emphasis on breathing, posture, tone production, embouchure formation, intonation tendencies, and articulation.  Other topics include techniques for individual practice and rehearsal, solo and ensemble literature, warm-ups, the right hand in horn playing, instrument selection, and using technology to maximize student learning.

MUED 686 Music and Movement for the Young Child / July 2-6 / 9:00a-5:30p / Mueller
Music and movement strategies and activities for the young child.  Materials in music education for children ages three through eight, with additional emphasis for children from birth through age two.  Focus on age- and developmental-appropriateness, relative to music learning theories and implementation in early childhood music instructional settings, including the integration of the arts across the curriculum.  Prerequisite(s): MUED 630 or consent of the instructor.

MUED 683 Marching Band Director's Workshop / July 9-13 / TBA / Miliauskas
The class will explore all aspects of show design, along with teaching strategies for the marching band.  A summer camp for high school marching band students will be held at the same time. For more information visit: http://www.towson.edu/bands/mb/summerCamp.asp

MUED 673 Strings Refresher (2) / July 23-27 / 9:00a-4:00p / Staff
This workshop offers hands-on study of string instruments (violin, viola, cello, and bass) including left hand technique, bowing, pedagogical approaches, maintenance, and minor repairs.  Other topics include rehearsal techniques, solo and ensemble literature, and using technology to maximize student learning.  Bring an instrument.  Some additional instruments provided by the University.

All workshops will be in the Center for the Arts on the TU campus unless otherwise specified.

** - An Additional fee of $35.00 is charged for these workshops.  Fee is payable by cash or check (made out to Towson University) on the first day of class.

Parking Information

Parking permits are required to park in Towson University lots.  The cost is $5.00/day during the summer.  Permits can be purchased each day at the yellow kiosk at the entrance to Lot 11, which is before Cross Campus Drive on Osler Drive.  These one-day permits can be used in Lot 11 OR the Union Garage, both of which are across the street from the Center for the Arts.  Please note that a citation for ‘failure to register’ has a parking fine of $75 for each occurrence.  Plan on arriving by 8:30 AM on the first day of your course to familiarize yourself with these campus procedures.
