One of the goals of MIEA is to help expand student’s educational opportunities by offering financial assistance so they can study abroad. Many of Maryland’s higher educational institutions understand the importance of a study abroad experience for its students and are members of MIEA. These institutions offer their own short-term, semester-based and yearlong programs, as well as collaborate with national or international-based organizations which coordinate study abroad programs.

Dear MIEA Scholarship Committee,

I want to thank you very much for your scholarship contribution to my South Africa exchange. Experiencing South Africa was a tremendous learning experience for me that was truly life changing. I find myself applying what I learned to my home and school life. The most intense learning experiences for me came from talking with everyday people about life, survival and progress in building a new society. Despite all of the deep social and economic issues I learned that the motivation of the people to make change is a living force in South Africa.

This trip strengthened my interest and passion for issues in Africa. I believe my education on the trip and in the classroom will significantly contribute not only to my academic studies but in my development as a contributing member of my community.

I would like to reiterate my thanks to you for providing me this opportunity to me, my family and community.
