MARYLAND EDUCATORS' SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM
ON-SITE VISIT CHECKLIST
Please review the following issues during the on-site interview or prior to the intern's start date:
1. _____ Overview of the research facility...type of research, organizational structure, number of people on staff, major research accomplishments, etc.
2. _____ Description of the research group the Intern will join...the members of the group, their backgrounds, primary research interests, current research projects.
3. _____ Written description of the research project(s) Intern will participate in. It is important to define specific tasks, requirements, etc. that the Intern can call his/her own. Discuss how this project fits into the overall goals of the organization (what is the "big picture?") and what will be done with the project at the end of the internship period.
4. _____ Starting date: (suggested starting date: Monday closest to June 19)
5. _____ Ending date: (suggested completion date: Friday closest to August 11)
Most internships are for a period of eight weeks -- exact time frame to be determined by research site.
6. _____ Expected daily arrival and departure time. Discuss any variations in a regular schedule (field work, travel, flex-time, weekend/evenings, etc.)
7. _____ Name of a "back up person" in the group to assist the Intern if mentor is on travel or unavailable.
8. _____ Tour of the research facilities...Where will the Intern work?
9. _____ Description of facilities...library access, equipment resources, computer facilities, cafeteria facilities ("brown bag" or buy?), parking arrangements, etc.
10. _____ Special requirements...I.D. Card, drug testing?
11. _____ On-site orientation, safety training.
12. _____ Information which can be read before start date to prepare Intern for work assignment - (text books, journal articles, annual reports, technical publications, etc.)
13. _____ Opportunities for in-house seminars, discussions, etc. with other staff members.
14. _____ Computer requirements: does site have access to the Internet? Can Intern obtain a site account? (Most Interns have Internet accounts through MESRP.) If there are special software requirements, MESRP will try to arrange training before the start of the internship.
15. _____ Other special arrangements, considerations to be discussed before start date.
