Site Visit Checklist

MARYLAND EDUCATORS' SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM

ON-SITE VISIT CHECKLIST

 

Please review the following issues during the on-site interview or prior to the intern's start date:

 

1.  _____         Overview of the research facility...type of research, organization­al structure, number of people on staff, major research ac­com­plish­ments, etc.

 

2.  _____         Description of the research group the Intern will join...the members of the group, their backgrounds, primary research interests, current research projects.

 

3.  _____         Written description of the research project(s) Intern will partici­pate in.  It is important to define specific tasks, require­ments, etc. that the Intern can call his/her own.  Discuss how this project fits into the overall goals of the organization (what is the "big picture?") and what will be done with the project at the end of the internship period.

 

4.  _____         Starting date: (suggested starting date: Monday closest to June 19)

 

5.  _____         Ending date: (suggested completion date: Friday closest to August 11)

Most internships are for a period of eight weeks -- exact time frame to be determined by research site.

 

6.  _____         Expected daily arrival and departure time.  Discuss any variations in a regular schedule (field work, travel, flex-time, wee­k­end/ev­enings, etc.)     

 

7.  _____         Name of a "back up person" in the group to assist the Intern if mentor is on travel or unavailable.

 

8.  _____         Tour of the research facilities...Where will the Intern work?

 

9.  _____         Description of facilities...library access, equipment resources, comput­er facilities, cafeteria facilities ("brown bag" or buy?), parking arrange­ments, etc.

 

10. _____         Special requirements...I.D. Card, drug testing?

 

11. _____         On-site orientation, safety training.

 

12. _____         Information which can be read before start date to prepare Intern for work assignment - (text books, journal articles, annual reports, technical publications, etc.)

 

13. _____         Opportunities for in-house seminars, discussions, etc. with other staff members.

 

14. _____         Computer requirements: does site have access to the Internet?  Can Intern obtain a site account?  (Most Interns have Internet accounts through MESRP.)  If there are spe­cial software re­quirements, MESRP will try to arrange training before the start of the intern­ship.

 

15. _____         Other special arrangements, considerations to be discussed before start date.
