Attached is a list of research sites sponsoring one or more interns during the 2004 Summer Internship Program. Please select three sites that represent your top placement choices. List these sites in order of preference on the application form and explain IN DETAIL why you selected each site. (Your answers play a major role in the selection process).
Unless otherwise noted, opportunities are available at sites for both preservice and inservice teachers. Any exceptions are noted below the address in the description of the site.
Many sites describe a number of general on-going research areas rather than a specific research project. In these cases, the sites prefer to work with the intern(s) to identify a project that is of specific interest. It is to your advantage to describe in detail on the application which research projects at a site are of particular interest to you and why. The research sites will often use the information you provide to select a mentor and to identify an appropriate placement for you at the site.
Don't be put off by sites that describe research procedures, techniques, etc. that are unfamiliar to you. The research sites do not expect you to have the same knowledge level as a scientist -- they are willing to work with us to identify positions and responsibilities appropriate for an intern's background and skills.
Each position includes recommended background and skills. You do not need all skills listed to apply for a particular internship placement. We will try to match interns' skills and interests with recommended backgrounds whenever possible, based on the requirements of the research site.
Many positions recommend elementary, intermediate, or high-level computer skills (either IBM/PC or Macintosh). Please keep in mind that everyone judges skill levels differently. Don’t underestimate your abilities. Also, many sites are willing to provide on-site training for specific software packages, so you should not let specific computer skills deter you from selecting sites of interest if you have general computer experience.
