  MESRP Intern Responsibilities

 

Upon accepting placement in a MESRP internship, Interns sign a contract agreeing to the following:

 

 

PREPARATION

 

Complete an Initial Site Visit prior to May 17th to meet Site Representative and/or Mentor Scientist, discuss research project, and establish work schedule.  (The Research Site reserves the right of final approval contingent on the outcome of the Site Visit.)

 

Participate in MESRP Program Orientation (May 22, 2004) to review and discuss program procedures, expectations, and outcomes.

 

 

SUMMER INTERNSHIP

 

Report to research site for the duration of the assigned internship and complete a technical or scientific research project in accordance with the expectations established by the Site.

 

Maintain an anecdotal journal of summer work experiences including the following:

             

                          *  Day-to-day experiences

                          *  Educational outcomes and themes

                          *  Science and mathematics content information and resources

                          *  Discussions with mentor and staff

 

              (If the Site requires the maintenance of a Research Log, the Log may be substituted for

              the journal, provided it is supplemented with an anecdotal record  at least once each

              week.)

 

Participate in ListServ exchange (once per week minimum). 

 

Meet with the Internship Coordinator during the internship period to discuss the research project, overall progress, concerns, etc.

 

Work with fellow intern(s) and/or mentor scientist to plan Outreach Activities.

 

Identify professionals (mentors, Towson University faculty, technical experts) who may serve as resource persons upon returning to the classroom.

 

 

MID-SUMMER MEETING

 

Attend the Mid-Summer Meeting on July 24, 2004 (location tba) to discuss research experiences, participate in professional development activities, and coordinate plans for fulfilling Outreach requirements.

An optional Intern Social Outing will be held the evening before (July 23rd) - details will be provided at Orientation.

 

  

FALL SYMPOSIUM

 

Attend the Fall Symposium in October (day, time, and location tbd) to present a formal report and written abstract of the research project to interns, mentors, and invited guests.  Presentation to include appropriate visual aides. (CIP Draft due at this time.)

 

 

OUTREACH

 

Work independently and in teams to develop creative ways to transfer experiences from laboratories to the classroom to benefit students as well as other teachers.  Outreach Requirements include the following:

 

                          *  Classroom Implementation Project

                                      Develop a comprehensive learning package for transferring the "real

                                      world" research experience into hands-on lessons and activities for

implementation in the classroom.  Complete CIP packages are developed for distribution to other interns and interested educators throughout Maryland.

 

                          *  Speaking Event

Arrange an opportunity to speak to teachers, administrators, parents, or community members about the internship experience and how it changed the way science and mathematics is viewed and taught. 

 

                          *  Team or Collaborative Activity

                                      Develop a partnership with other professionals in the scientific and/or

academic community to design and participate in a project that impacts  the way science and mathematics is viewed and taught.
