Program Themes

Year 1: Exploring Diversity Behind Teaching Models. The program will compare and contrast North American, British and Continental media theories. Project participants will be introduced to Western research tools and will learn how to apply these techniques to the spectrum of theories available in the East and the West. Participants will apply the new tools of media criticism to news events as they unfold during the year. Participants will be encouraged to use these techniques in their research papers and to present them at conferences. Participants will review newly-implemented course materials and research papers through a website established by program administrators.

Year 2: The Role and Impact of Media Critics In Society The program will examine the role and the impact of media critics in society. Participants will review the purpose behind the profession of media criticism. In reviewing the theoretical foundation of media criticism, participants will examine the way in which the field of media studies relates to other disciplines through a broader philosophical context. By exploring the infrastructure of the international communications studies academic community, participants will examine the extent of media pervasiveness in society. Seminars in year two will establish the standards of academic writing related to the field of media theory, media criticism, and research.
