Media Literacy and Research: Tools for Innovation in Teaching
Project Goals and Theme
The program for 2007-2008 will focus on media literacy and research as a vehicle for innovation in teaching. The role of research in academia and media studies and the function it serves in developing independent, critical and credible intellectual inquiry will be explored. Seminars will evaluate the importance of research and ethics in assessing the validity of preconceived concepts, approaches and standards for university teaching. The program will compare and contrast preferences for media studies research in Western Europe, North America and the former Soviet Union and will examine the benefits of combining various methodologies to enhance the results of academic research. At the conclusion of our seminars, participants will have a clear understanding of the correlation between theory, politics and research methods and how to apply specific methods within a given philosophical paradigm in order to conduct studies and develop teaching methodologies that enhance media literacy.
The recent debate in the CIS academic community on whether to shift media studies curricula toward a sociologically research-oriented approach will be explored. The program will also examine the accepted standards of academic writing in the field of media theory, media criticism and research. By exploring the infrastructure of the international communications academic community, junior faculty participants will be introduced to the concept of writing in a vernacular that increases accessibility to the media, the general public and policy makers, thus allowing them to gain greater exposure for their research.
