Dr. Algren has more than 20 years of experience as a working journalist and a public relations practitioner. Her research interests include relationship development between organizations and their publics, public relations pedagogy, and roles of public relations professionals.
Garry Bolan

Prof. Bolan specializes in public relations, advertising and corporate communication. He is the former director of advertising and publications for Maryland Casualty Company and served as a creative service manager at PHH Corporation and Integrated Health Services. He is a past president of the Baltimore chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators.

 Dionne Clemons

Dr. Clemons has more than a decade of private and public sector experience in public affairs as a sub-specialization of public relations, journalism and technical writing. Her research interests focus on governments' perception of public relations and public relations’ impact on government transparency and policy making. Specifically, she has conducted research on the coorientation of the public relations role within public sector environments. 

 Hua Jiang

Dr. Jiang has done research in the areas of organization-public relationships (OPRs), leadership in public relations, work-life conflict, activism, identities, ethics, and global public relations. Her work has appeared in Public Relations Review, Public Relations Journal, and Journal of Public Affairs. She teaches Principles of Strategic Public Relations and Integrated Communication, Mass Communication Research, Theories of Public Relations and Organizational Communication, and Practice of Public Relations and Organizational Communication

Dr. Kim specializes in advertising and society, international advertising, advertising campaigns, political economy of mass communication. Her research interests include globalization of the transnational advertising agencies in Asia, media coverage of U.S. cigarette trade talks and policy, and commercialization and representation of women in advertising.   Dr. Kim is the coordinator of the undergraduate unit that includes advertising and public relations.

Dr. Kong teaches media planning, advertising research methods and principles of advertising.  Maggie Lears

Prof. Lears teaches in both the Mass Communication and Communication Studies majors including introductory courses as well as courses in nonverbal communication, public speaking and advertising.  She also serves as an FYE advisor.  Her research interests center on mass media and society in areas such as advertising effects on children, media and stereotypes, health communication among college aged women with eating disorders and, gender and communication.  She has consulted in the private and public sector on communication apprehension and managerial communication.

 Jung-Sook Lee

Dr. Lee specializes in advertising and teaches media planning, advertising campaigns, and principles of advertising. She conducts research about the role of affect on cognitive organization, attitudes toward advertising, attribution, content analysis of advertising messages for health-risk products, and communication strategy for health promotion and public policy. In between her academic training, she worked in international advertising and public relations for Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea and performed market research for the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board in Madison, Wisconsin in the U.S.  Dr. Lee is the Interim Chair of the department.

 Mark McElreath

Dr. McElreath specializes in applied ethics for professional communicators.  He teaches media ethics, strategic public relations and integrated communications.  He is the author of several textbooks in this field and numerous scholarly publications.  He is an active member of the Commission on Public Relations Education, the Public Relations Society of America and the International Association of Business Communicators. 

 Alexandra Vilela

Dr. Vilela has more than 10 years of professional experience in advertising, marketing, public relations and journalism. Current research in Cause-Related Marketing, with key aspects involving the effects of the type of social cause sponsored (health, non-health causes) and the influence of psychographics (values) and demographics (gender) in consumer responses. Interests also include civic engagement issues (volunteering), philanthropy/charity, and health/social campaigns.

Beth Haller

Dr. Haller specializies in feature writing, newswriting and reporting;  media law and ethics;  media portrayal of people with disabilities; and online journalism.  Research areas: mass media images of disability issues and people with disabilities, news media history, the alternative and ethnic press. Co-Editor of the academic journal (2003-2006), Disability Studies Quarterly.   Dr. Haller is the coordinator for the undergraduate unit that includes Journalism and New Media.

Dr. Nichols specializes in mass communication and society, media criticism and ethics, and the practice of journalism. Her research interests include the role of the press in a democracy, new media technologies, and media representations of marginalized groups. Dr. Zhang teaches mass communication research methods, theory, and effects courses.  Her research is focused on cognitive processing of narratives and sociocultural and psychological effects of media messages.  Specifically , she has done research on entertainment education, health information campaigns, media and stereotypes, media use and decision making.

Dr. Barnett's areas of interest (both teaching and research) include research methods, health communication, interpersonal communication, and gender communication.  Her research track has focused on doctor-patient "mis" -communication, adolescent and college binge drinking, and behavior change in health campaigns such as tobacco cessation.  Whether it's quantitative, qualitative, evaluative, or applied, she's never met a research project she doesn't like!

 Teodora Carabas

Dr. Carabas studies rhetorical theory and criticism, advocacy and argument, political communication/public sphere theory, and media ecology. Her research and teaching interests focus on the study of public discourse and on the role that communication technologies play in structuring the interaction between civil society and the state. Dr. Carabas is the graduate program director for the department and the faculty advisor for the Lambda Pi Eta National Honors Society.

 Audra McMullen

Dr. McMullen specializes in organizational communication, training and development, conflict management, and communicating with people with physical disabilities. Dissertation is an ethnographic study of the organizational culture in the National Federation of the Blind. Research area: communicating with people with disabilities. Advises students who use qualitative methods and rhetorical theory.  Dr. McMullen is the coordinator of the undergraduate track that includes Communication Studies. 

 Carol Norton

Prof. Norton has over 20 years of combined business/professional and Communication Studies instructional experience.  Ms. Norton has private and public sector communications experience.  She led marketing initiatives as the Baltimore Office Marketing Manager for ICF Kaiser Engineers and JMT.  She was the Manager of Special Projects for the Maryland Mass Transit Administration spearheading light rail community outreach, organizational development initiatives, and federal policy implementation. As Special Assistant to the Construction Manager and Community Relations Liaison, she was responsible for community relations and crisis management for the $339 Million Baltimore Metro Northeast Extension.  Ms. Norton specializes in interpersonal, organizational and public speaking.  Her teaching experience includes, Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Communication, Nonverbal Communication, Communication Training and Development and Public Speaking.  She has consulted in “public speaking pragmatics” in the Baltimore Region.

Elizabeth Skinner

Prof. Skinner is the Debate Coach as well as the Advisor for Pi Kappa Delta.

 Jennifer Struve

Dr. Struve studies intercultural communication and rhetorical theory and criticism. Her research focuses on the way in which culture and cultural identity is infused in individual and public rhetorical choices. Her teaching interests include intercultural communication, gender and communication, rhetorical theory and criticism, and political communication.  

Dr. Struve is the department's Speech Coach.

Prof. Turowski teaches introductory courses in both the mass communication and communication studies majors, as well as courses in public speaking, organizational communication, and media theory.  She serves as both a FYE advisor and a TU Care advisor.  For five years she served as Campus Director of the  Southeast Europe Youth Leadership Institute.  She has taught communication and leadership seminars in both the U.S. and Europe, and has consulted on grant proposals for international programs.

 Richard Vatz

Dr. Vatz specializes in persuasion, language and psychiatry, political rhetoric. Recipient of Towson University’s “Distinguished Professor” award, “Faculty Member of the Year, 2009,”  4 outstanding teacher awards and 4 University merit awards and others.   Author of about 500 articles, reviews and papers in professional journals, newspapers and  conventions.  Blogs regularly for Red Maryland.  Commentator: local radio, TV; guested on PBS' “Firing Line,”  CNN's “Larry King Live” and Crossfire,  and “Donahue.”  Associate Editor and Board of Trustees, USA Today Magazine. 30-year member of Towson University Senate.

Kaustubh (Keb) Nande brings more than seven years of combined international experience in journalism, public relations, communication consulting and academia. At Towson University, he teaches public speaking and communication research that includes new media measurement. Not bounded by methodological determinism, Kaustubh’s dissertation research focuses on an interpretive analysis of ‘communicative tensions’ experienced by PR and corporate communication professionals as they build and maintain relationships with journalists, clients, supervisors and subordinates. To date, Kaustubh has had three publications, one NCA top paper award, eight competitive conference papers and five teaching preparations to his credit.

 Ken Kim

Ken specializes in advertising and teaches Advertising Campaigns and Media Planning. His research focuses on cognitive effects of a variety of advertising message tactics with an emphasis on strategic message use and its impact on persuasiveness in Direct-to-Consumer pharmaceutical advertising. Ken’s scholarship has been recognized with the Alumni Fellowship Award from the College of Journalism & Communications at the University of Florida, the International Journal of Advertising Best Student Paper Award, and AEJMC Advertising Division Top Student Paper Award. His teaching experience includes Advertising Research Methods, Advertising Strategy, and Zimmerman Advertising Boot Campaign.

Prof. Potter teaches Public Relations Writing, Public Relations for Nonprofit Organizationals, Stratgic Public Relations and Integrated Communication Campaigns and selected courses in the dpeartment's Master of Science program in Communication Management.  Prof. Potter also serves as Faculty Advisor to the PR Group comprised of PRSA and IABC student chapters and as Faculty Advisor to Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority.  Prof. Potter is the author of The Communication Plan:  The Heart of Strategic Communication and Business Managment for Communicators:  Beyond Strategic Communication.  IABC-Accredited communicator and an IABC Fellow, IABC's highest honor and a candidate for a doctorate in Instructional Technology at Towson University.
