ON-LINE SELF ADMINISTERED ADVISING

On-Line Self-Administered Advising is designed for pre-mass communication, mass communication, and communication studies majors who wish to opt out of group and/or one-on-one advising at certain times during their undergraduate academic career.

Departmental advising in one form or another must take place each fall and spring semester in order to have the advising hold flag lifted from your PeopleSoft student account prior to course registration for the upcoming semester.  Participating in self-administered advising does not preclude students from seeking individual advising in the future.

WHAT IS ON-LINE SELF-ADMINISTERED ADVISING?

On-line self-administered advising is an advising alternative for those students who feel they are comfortable in planning and  monitoring their academic progress. In choosing on-line self–administered advising, the student is accepting responsibility for knowing specific academic markers of his/her own degree plan and sub-plan.

HOW DOES ON-LINE SELF-ADMINISTERED ADVISING WORK?

The student accesses and completes the Self Administered Advising Form. Completion requires students to access and refer to their Degree Progress Report.  You can access your Degree Progress Report by logging onto your PeopleSoft student account, following the path: Self Service > Student Center.  Using the drop down box 'other academic' select Degree Progress Report and click on '>>'.  Using the drop down box arrow for the Academic Institution, select Towson University.  Using the drop down box arrow for the Report Type, select Degree Progress Report, then click Go.

Upon successful completion of the form, the student prints, signs and dates the form.

The Self-Administered Advising Form must be hand carried to the Mass Communication and Communication Studies (MCCS) Office in Media Center, Room #114.

The hours of operation are Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The form will be reviewed for completion, and WILL NOT be accepted until the required information has been completed.

WHAT SELF-ADMINISTERED ADVISING DOESN’T DO

It is NOT a complete replacement for any one on one or group advising that may need to periodically occur as dictated by the Mass Communication and Communication Studies (MCCS) Department and/or university policy or practice.

On-Line Self-Administered Advising does not negate or change any currently identified advisors on your student account. You can identify your advisor by logging onto your PeopleSoft student account, following the path: Self Service > Student Center.   If no advisor is listed or if you want to change your advisor, contact the MCCS Office on 410-704-3431.

REMOVING THE ADVISING HOLD FLAG

On-Line Self-Administered Advising is a valid advising tool, which when completed successfully, will allow your advising hold flag to be removed prior to registration for the upcoming semester.

The Advising Hold Flag can only be lifted by a representative in the department of your declared major listed in PeopleSoft. Hold flags are not utilized for minimester and summer.

The student completed, signed, and dated Self-Administered Advising Form allows the department to lift the advising hold flag from your PeopleSoft student account.  We will make every effort to have the hold flag lifted prior to your registration deadline.    A member of our staff will make note of the advising hold flag removal and initial the form.  A copy of this signed document will be placed in your student file housed within the MCCS Department.

It is the student’s responsibility to verify the removal of the Advising Hold Flag prior to registration.  You can view your hold flags by logging onto your PeopleSoft student account, following the path:  Self Service > Student Center.

It is the student’s responsibility to make sure ALL HOLD FLAGS on the student account are removed (EX:  Bursar Hold).
