Elementary Education Major with Mathematics Minor

Elementary Education majors who complete a mathematics minor will possess the necessary concepts and skills to effectively teach both elementary and middle school mathematics.  Special field-based courses are available so that students will experience teaching mathematics (specifically at the middle school level) in addition to the other elementary school subjects.  Students in this program should be advised by faculty members in both the Departments of Elementary Education and Mathematics.  Early Childhood Education majors who wish to minor in mathematics should consult with faculty members in both the Departments of Early Childhood Education and Mathematics for appropriate course work and counseling.

The minor in mathematics for the elementary education major requires 25–26 unit hours, with each course completed with a grade equivalent of 2.00 or higher.  Students must also complete requirements for their major as specified by the Department of Elementary Education. The minor requires the six courses listed below, plus at least three additional unit hours of upper-division electives in mathematics.

Required Courses (22 units)

MATH 267 Introduction to Abstract Mathematics (4 units)
MATH 273 Calculus I (4 units)
MATH 274 Calculus II (4 units)
MATH 301 History of Mathematics (3 units)
MATH 330 Introduction to Statistical Methods (4 units)
MATH 353 Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometries (3 units)

Upper-Division Mathematics Elective (3–4 units)
One course from the following:

MATH 305 Chance (3 units)
MATH 315 Applied Combinatorics (3 units)
MATH 326 The Mathematics of Information Science (3 units)
MATH 331 Probability (4 units)
MATH 465 Theory of Numbers (3 units)

In addition to the required and elective courses listed above that comprise the minor in mathematics, other resources that will help the student complete this minor are:
