Frequently Asked Questions
This page contains answers to frequently asked questions about courses in the developmental mathematics sequence and links to information both for students and for their advisors.
Q. Do I earn credit for DVMT 101 or MATH 102?
A. DVMT 101 is a review course which does not earn graduation credit. MATH 102 earns three credits towards graduation. Neither course fulfills any Gen ED or Core Curriculum requirement..
Q. Do I need to take a course in the developmental mathematics sequence?
A. This is determined by your placement test. Placement tests are administered by the Developmental Education Office. The Placement Test Information page contains everything you need to know about the tests. (For example, if your Mathematics SAT score is above 500, you do not need to take the placement math exam, and you are ready to take a regular mathematics course.) Depending on your score on the mathematics placement exam, the Developmental Education Office will tell one of three things:
- You need to take both DVMT 101 and MATH 102.
- You need to take only MATH 102.
- You do not need to take either DVMT 101 or MATH 102. This means that you are ready for a regular mathematics course.
Q. I have been taking a course in the developmental mathematics sequence, but I am not done with them yet. What are my options?
A. Your options depend on how much of the course that you have completed (the more the better):
- Still haven't passed DVMT 101. There's just one thing to do: pass 101!
- Passed (or don't need) DVMT 101, but still need MATH 102. Then you can:
- Passed (or don't need) DVMT 101, passed unit 3 in MATH 102, but still need unit 4. Then you can:
Q. I heard about Course Compass and online homeworks. What is that about?
A. Web-based homeworks and quizzes are a major part of DVMT 101 and MATH 102. You need to register with Course Compass before your first class. The access codes, good for one year, are bundled with the textbooks you buy at the University Bookstore. You can also buy the access code directly from Course Compass, and this access code enables you to use the e-version of the textbook. (www.coursecompass.com)
