2008 Black History Month Thursdays with the AACC!

African Americans in Defense of America Opening Reception

This fascinating memorabilia exhibition documents the heroic contributions of black soldiers to American military history on the eve of the 60th anniversary of Executive Order 9981, signed in 1948 by President Harry S. Truman to end all segregation in the U.S. armed forces.

Hi-De-Ho Zoot Suiter From Baltimore
Exhibit: February 1–29; Opening Reception: February 7, 4–7 p.m.
African American Cultural Center, University Union 317

An exhibit of paintings, photographs and memorabilia celebrating the life of the world renown entertainer Cab Calloway on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The exhibit highlights the early influences in Baltimore which shaped his career in music, film, TV, radio, fashion and the legitimate stage. Original paintings by Baltimore artist Nathaniel Gibbs depict early black Baltimore with great sensitivity and historic accuracy. The exhibit, sponsored by BLEWS, the Black-Jewish Forum of Baltimore, also highlights the influence of Yiddish music on Calloway’s musical offerings. Calloway perfected a cantorial style with an underscore of Delta Blues which was unique for his time.

Campus Recreation Services is gearing up for the 4th Annual LEAD Strong Half Marathon to be held on Saturday, May 3. Last year, we had more than 100 runners finish the 13.1 mile race. This leadership-focused race includes a 12-week training program, peer running groups and, of course, free food and giveaways. Intro to Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is an ancient meditative practice that helps people manage unpleasant emotions and stress. Martial arts such as Aikido or Judo teach students to receive and use the force of an opponent’s blow. Similarly, mindfulness teaches us how we can receive and use the power of so called “negative” emotions to strengthen our self-awareness and enrich our lives. In addition to teaching students how to meditate to reduce stress, the Introduction to Mindfulness Meditation Workshop will cover mindful eating, pleasant event recall, breathing space, responding versus reacting and barriers to mindfulness practice.

Workshop with Tim Berne’s Bloodcount

Bloodcount members Tim Berne (alto and baritone saxophones), Chris Speed (tenor saxophone and clarinet), Michael Formanek (acoustic bass) and Jim Black (percussion), present a workshop discussing their work in an informal setting. The group performed over 400 concerts worldwide before disbanding in 1998. Admission is free.

The National Broadcasting Society Student Chapter Meeting

The group is composed of students who are interested in pursuing careers in the electronic media and film. The group hosts guest speakers and sponsors field trips to various local media locations, along with community service activities. The United States vs. Art
Department of Art Lecture Series: Robert K. Wittman, guest lecturer

6:30 p.m., Center for the Arts, Harold J. Kaplan Concert Hall
Robert K. Wittman, special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Art Crime Team and Towson University alumnus, serves as the FBI’s investigative expert worldwide specializing in art, antiques, jewelry and gem identification lectures on international art crime. He has been responsible for the recovery of more than $215 million worth of stolen art and cultural property and has been instrumental in the prosecution and conviction of numerous individuals involved in these crimes. Wittman has been designated as the senior investigator of the FBI’s rapid deployment national Art Crime Team (ACT). Admission is free.

MFA Thesis Exhibition Opening Reception:
Ellen Harper: History Lessons
7:30–9 p.m., Center for the Arts, Holtzman MFA Gallery
MFA candidate Ellen Harper works in interdisciplinary media. Her artwork encompasses a wide variety of media including drawing, sculpture, fashion design, photography and performance to create installations and specific environments which explore the role of women and notions of beauty. Often employing makeup as a drawing medium and referencing corsetry and Victorian fashion in her clothing, Harper draws from the past to question what it means to be a woman in contemporary society. There will be a performance at the reception. Admission is free. Exhibition: February 8–March 7; Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.

Illustration: A Historical Look Opening Reception
7:30–9 p.m., Center for the Arts Gallery
Spanning the 20th century, this comprehensive exhibition of historical illustration includes 500 original masterworks from the permanent collection of the Society of Illustrators Museum of American Illustration. Works represent each decade from 1890–2000, demonstrating the evolution of the illustrator’s role in society. Included in the exhibit are early black and white illustrations created by Gibson and Raleigh; juicy story illustrations by LaGatta, Tepper, Cornwell and Helck; advertisements for cigarettes, automobiles and travel; 1950s story art by Whitmore, Whitcomb and Bowler; and works by the current stars of today, such as Kelley, Duillo, Fuchs and Hooks. Ancient Bronzes of the Asian Grasslands Opening Reception
3–5 p.m., Center for the Arts, Asian Arts Gallery
On loan from the Arthur M. Sackler Foundation and curated by Dr. Trudy S. Kawami, this exhibition focuses on ancient bronze objects from the central and eastern steppes of Asia that were home to a remarkable ancient culture whose art, richly decorated with animal motifs, is only beginning to be understood by scholars. An exhibition of contemporary Mongolian artwork, made possible by the Mongolian Embassy, will also be on view to complement the ancient bronzes. The exhibition is part of The Arthur M. Sackler Foundation and the Embassy of Mongolia, Washington, D.C. Taking tests can be extremely stressful for some students, and the anxiety they experience while taking tests affects their performance. The Counseling Center is offering a free test-taking anxiety workshop to aid students in understanding the impact of anxiety on test performance. Mindfulness is an ancient meditative practice that helps people manage unpleasant emotions and stress. Martial arts such as Aikido or Judo teach students to receive and use the force of an opponent’s blow. Similarly, mindfulness teaches us how we can receive and use the power of so called “negative” emotions to strengthen our self-awareness and enrich our lives. A Bit of Salsa! Quintrigre – Towson University Wind Quintet

The first half of this concert features two rarely heard works for woodwind quintet, the charming Romantic work by August Klughardt and the Quintette (en forme de Choros) by Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos.
