fascinating memorabilia exhibition documents the heroic
contributions of black soldiers to American military history on
the eve of the 60th anniversary of Executive Order 9981, signed
in 1948 by President Harry S. Truman to end all segregation in
the U.S. armed forces.

African American Cultural Center, University Union 317
An
exhibit of paintings, photographs and memorabilia celebrating
the life of the world renown entertainer Cab Calloway on the
100th anniversary of his birth. The exhibit highlights the early
influences in Baltimore which shaped his career in music, film,
TV, radio, fashion and the legitimate stage. Original paintings
by Baltimore artist Nathaniel Gibbs depict early black Baltimore
with great sensitivity and historic accuracy. The exhibit,
sponsored by BLEWS, the Black-Jewish Forum of Baltimore, also
highlights the influence of Yiddish music on Calloway’s musical
offerings. Calloway perfected a cantorial style with an
underscore of Delta Blues which was unique for his time.

Intro
to Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is an ancient meditative practice that helps people manage
unpleasant emotions and stress. Martial arts such as Aikido or Judo teach
students to receive and use the force of an opponent’s blow. Similarly,
mindfulness teaches us how we can receive and use the power of so called
“negative” emotions to strengthen our self-awareness and enrich our lives. In
addition to teaching students how to meditate to reduce stress, the Introduction
to Mindfulness Meditation Workshop will cover mindful eating, pleasant event
recall, breathing space, responding versus reacting and barriers to mindfulness
practice.

Workshop

Bloodcount members Tim Berne (alto and baritone saxophones),
Chris Speed (tenor saxophone and clarinet), Michael Formanek
(acoustic bass) and Jim Black (percussion), present a workshop
discussing their work in an informal setting. The group
performed over 400 concerts worldwide before disbanding in 1998.

Department of Art Lecture Series: Robert K. Wittman, guest
lecturer
6:30 p.m., Center for the Arts, Harold J. Kaplan Concert Hall
Robert K. Wittman, special agent of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation’s Art Crime Team and Towson University alumnus,
serves as the FBI’s investigative expert worldwide specializing
in art, antiques, jewelry and gem identification lectures on
international art crime. He has been responsible for the
recovery of more than $215 million worth of stolen art and
cultural property and has been instrumental in the prosecution
and conviction of numerous individuals involved in these crimes.
Wittman has been designated as the senior investigator of the
FBI’s rapid deployment national Art Crime Team (ACT). Admission
is free.

Ellen Harper: History Lessons

MFA
candidate Ellen Harper works in interdisciplinary media. Her
artwork encompasses a wide variety of media including drawing,
sculpture, fashion design, photography and performance to create
installations and specific environments which explore the role
of women and notions of beauty. Often employing makeup as a
drawing medium and referencing corsetry and Victorian fashion in
her clothing, Harper draws from the past to question what it
means to be a woman in contemporary society. There will be a
performance at the reception. Admission is free. Exhibition:

Illustration: A Historical Look Opening Reception

Spanning the 20th century, this comprehensive exhibition of
historical illustration includes 500 original masterworks from
the permanent collection of the Society of Illustrators Museum
of American Illustration. Works represent each decade from
1890–2000, demonstrating the evolution of the illustrator’s role
in society. Included in the exhibit are early black and white
illustrations created by Gibson and Raleigh; juicy story
illustrations by LaGatta, Tepper, Cornwell and Helck;
advertisements for cigarettes, automobiles and travel; 1950s
story art by Whitmore, Whitcomb and Bowler; and works by the
current stars of today, such as Kelley, Duillo, Fuchs and Hooks.

Bronzes of the Asian Grasslands Opening Reception

exhibition focuses on ancient bronze objects from the central and eastern
steppes of Asia that were home to a remarkable ancient culture whose art, richly
decorated with animal motifs, is only beginning to be understood by scholars. An
exhibition of contemporary Mongolian artwork, made possible by the Mongolian

Taking tests can be extremely stressful for some students, and
the anxiety they experience while taking tests affects their
performance. The Counseling Center is offering a free
test-taking anxiety workshop to aid students in understanding
the impact of anxiety on test performance. Students will also
learn about simple techniques and strategies that they can use
to combat test-taking anxiety and improve their comfort and
performance on exams.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is an ancient meditative practice that helps people
manage unpleasant emotions and stress. Martial arts such as
Aikido or Judo teach students to receive and use the force of an
opponent’s blow. Similarly, mindfulness teaches us how we can

strengthen our self-awareness and enrich our lives. In addition
to teaching students how to meditate to reduce stress, the

first half of this concert features two rarely heard works for woodwind quintet,
the charming Romantic work by August Klughardt and the Quintette (en forme de
Choros) by Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos. The work was co-commissioned with 24
other wind quintets in the United States. Suite Cantabile for Woodwind Quintet
by American composer Bill Douglas. The concert ends with Libertango by Astor
