Winning League Titles
Since joining the CAA in 2001, the Tigers have won league titles in football, baseball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, women’s swimming, men’s soccer and men’s golf. Over the last three seasons Towson has celebrated eight CAA championship teams – football, women’s lacrosse (three times), men's lacrosse, women's swimming and diving (twice) and baseball.
During an athletics history that traces its roots to the 1920s, Towson has sent teams and individual student-athletes to NCAA post-season competition in baseball, basketball, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, track and field, and volleyball. The Towson football team had a historic and record-breaking season in 2013 that culminated in a trip to the 2014 FCS National Championship game in Frisco, Texas against North Dakota State.
Great Athletics Facilities
Fans can enjoy supporting the Tigers in outstanding athletics facilities, including the 11,000-seat Johnny Unitas® Stadium (the metro area’s third-largest outdoor stadium) where our football, field hockey, lacrosse and track teams compete. John B. Schuerholz Park is our baseball park. Burdick Pool houses our swimming and diving venue.
SECU Arena, our newly constructed 5,200-seat, state-of-the-art athletics venue, is home to the basketball, gymnastics and volleyball teams.
Distinguished Student-Athletes and Alumni
Tiger student-athletes continue to distinguish themselves in the classroom as well as on the field of competition. Twelve Tigers have been named CAA Scholar-Athlete Award winners for their respective sports, including the 2010 cross country recipient, Brandi Gervais, a senior biology/pre-dentistry major with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
A number of student-athletes have gone on to enjoy professional sports careers, including most recently Jermon Bushrod, a 2012 Pro Bowl selection for the 2010 Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints and current offensive tackle for the Chicago Bears; Terrance West, the 94th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns; outfielder Casper Wells; and shooting guard Gary Neal, a 2011 NBA All-Rookie team selection.
Towson led all public Division I institutions in the country with a 74 percent graduation rate among African-American student athletes in 2014-15. Towson also boasts the highest graduation rate for student athletes in the University System of Maryland.
