Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Transferable Courses or Credits

If you have earned a grade of D or higher in any previous course or credit, your credit is transferable to TU as general education or elective units (English composition requires a 2.0 or higher for graduation from TU).  A grade equivalent of 2.0 or higher is required for any major course work.  Any major course transferred to TU with a grade of less than a 2.0 must be repeated at TU in order to count for major credit.  This will increase the number of units required for graduation proportionately.  For example, a 3-credit major course that you transfer to TU with less than a 2.0 and that is subsequently repeated at TU will increase the number of units needed for graduation from 120 to 123.

Advanced Placement (AP) credit is usually awarded on the basis of scores of 3 or above, with a score of 3 often requiring a review of the test booklet.

For any general CLEP or AP credit to be reviewed and/or awarded, you must provide the admissions office with an official report from the Educational Testing Service.  International Baccalaureate (IB) credit may also be awarded.

If a course was taken as upper-level at your previous four-year institution and numbered as such, you will automatically be awarded upper-level units. Community college courses that have upper-level equivalents at TU will be treated in the following manner:

The content of these courses will be recognized as satisfying specific course requirements; however, the credits will not count toward the 32 upper-level units required for graduation.

As a transfer student, you may petition potential major credit/elective credit to satisfy course(s) in your major program.  Simply contact your intended major department to determine which of these credits will apply toward your program.  You must complete a Petition to Change Original Transfer Credit Evaluation Form (PDF) at the link below. Take this form to your intended major department.

Enrolled TU students who take classes at another college or university must obtain prior approval from the Office of the Registrar before additional transfer credit will be awarded.  Additional transfer credit must be petitioned through Towson University prior to course scheduling. Contact the Registrar for a Petition to Transfer New Course Work to Towson University form.

Note:  Some comprehensive majors such as accounting, speech-language pathology and audiology, occupational therapy, and most education majors require more than two years of study on a full-time basis to complete degree requirements after an A.A. degree has been awarded.)
