TRANSFER Admissions

Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Professor and Student interacting

Towson University’s Office of Admissions prepares your evaluation of transfer credit. This evaluation is divided into a General Education (GenEd) requirements section, and a free elective/potential major credit section. Your prospective major department will assign potential major credit. Completion of a two-year degree does not guarantee the transfer of all course work completed.  In addition, an A.A./A.S. degree by itself will not satisfy all of TU’s GenEd requirements.

A maximum of 90 credits may be accepted from students transferring to the university from other institutions.  However, no more than 64 credits may be transferred from community colleges or other two-year institutions. Each student’s final 30 units (senior-year work) must be completed as a Towson University degree candidate.

Transfer credits will be awarded for most academic courses completed at any regionally accredited two- or four-year college or university.

A preliminary evaluation of transfer credit will be prepared upon receipt of your enrollment contract and application fee. All final transcripts are due in the Office of Admissions prior to your orientation and course scheduling date to allow time for the preparation of a final evaluation. To avoid registration delays, have your final transcript forwarded to the TU Office of Admissions at the end of your current semester.

Your admit letter will include the estimated number of credits transferable to Towson. After you accept the university’s offer of admission (by returning the Enrollment Contract and fee), you  will receive an official evaluation of transferable credits from the Office of Admissions. This evaluation is usually (but not always) preliminary in nature, since you may be taking additional courses at the time of admission. A final evaluation of credit will be prepared after you submit  the  final grades for the most current term. Your offer of admission will be withdrawn if your final GPA falls below the minimum standard.

Students working togetherWe encourage you to talk to your community college transfer counselor or TU admissions counselor about choosing two-year programs of study. Planning ahead will help you make the most of your community college experience and get the credit you’ll need to transfer to TU.

For course transferability in Maryland, access the ARTSYS Articulation System.

Transfer students can petition to have courses re-evaluated for potential credit toward their major. You must complete a Petition to Change Original Transfer Credit Evaluation form and take it to your intended major department to determine which credits in question will count toward your major. The form is available from the Office of Admissions.
