Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Student in class

Transfer credit may be awarded for successful completion of course work compatible with the Towson University curriculum.  Such credit will transfer from regionally accredited institutions or institutions that are candidates for regional accreditation.

Course work completed at degree-granting and non-degree granting higher education institutions that are not regionally accredited but hold national or specialized accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be considered for transfer credit on a case-by-case basis upon individual student request.

If an individual review is requested, the student must submit an institutional catalog or program of study, and copies of course syllabi for those courses for which transfer credit is desired.  The Office of Admissions will forward all documents to the corresponding Towson University academic department for review and evaluation.

Towson University’s Office of Admissions prepares your evaluation of transfer credit. This evaluation is divided into a General Education (GenEd) requirements section, and a free elective/potential major credit section. Your prospective major department will assign potential major credit. Completion of a two-year degree does not guarantee the transfer of all course work completed.  In addition, an A.A./A.S. degree by itself will not satisfy all of TU’s GenEd requirements.

Towson University will honor the courses you've completed towards your GenEd requirements from any Maryland public institution of higher learning.  This includes any work completed through Advanced Placement, CLEP or division exams.  Any of these test credits not transferred towards general education must be evaluated individually following Towson University regulation.  Please see the University Catalog for more information.

Is there a limit on transfer credits?

  • A maximum of 64 credits may be transferred from community colleges or other two-year institutions.
  • A maximum of 90 credits may be transferred from another four-year institution or combination of two and four-year institutions.
  • Your final 30 units (senior year work) must be completed as a Towson University degree candidate.

Which of my credits will transfer?

Transfer credits will be awarded for most academic courses completed at any regionally accredited two- or four-year college or university.

For course transferability regarding Maryland community colleges, access the ARTSYS Articulation System.

Towson ARTSYS is an online database with approved course equivalencies from a variety of community colleges and four-year institutions, outside of the Maryland community colleges.  These have been gathered from schools such as University of Maryland, College Park, Nassau Community College and Stevenson University.  We are constantly updating this Web site as new equivalencies are approved so our prospective students can get an accurate idea of how their courses will transfer.

How does the evaluation process work?

  1. We will send your admit letter to you and will include the estimated number of credits transferable to Towson.
  2. After you accept the university's offer of admission (by returning the enrollment contract and fee), you will receive an official evaluation of transferable credits.  This evaluation is usually (but not always) preliminary in nature since you may be taking additional courses at the time of admission.
  3. Forward your final transcripts to the TU Office of Admissions at the end of your current semester.
  4. A final evaluation of credit will be prepared after you submit your final grades for the most current term.  Your offer of admission remains valid as long as your final GPA remains above the minimum standard.

Paca HouseWe encourage you to talk to your community college transfer counselor or TU admissions counselor about choosing two-year programs of study. Planning ahead will help you make the most of your community college experience and get the credit you’ll need to transfer to TU.

What if I have questions about my transfer evaluation?

Transfer students can petition to have courses re-evaluated for potential TU equivalencies.  You must complete a Petition to Change Original Transfer Credit Evaluation form and take it to the appropriate department for review.  Once the review is completed, the form must be forwarded to Transfer Evaluation Services in the Enrollment Services Building, room 218.

Please use the Transfer Student Help Form for all other questions or concerns regarding your Transfer Credit Evaluation and forward the form to Transfer Evaluation Services in the Enrollment Services Building, room 218.
